3 Netflix shows that should be renewed (and 2 in danger of cancellation) in 2024
By Reed Gaudens
Over in the broadcast television world, it's cancellation jitters season as the networks start to announce all of the renewals and cancellations ahead of the reveal of their fall schedules. However, over here in Netflix Land, it's always cancellation jitters season.
Netflix has already handed out a number of renewals and cancellations in 2024, including axing Obliterated after one season and renewing Heartbreak High for a third and final season. But a handful of fan-favorite Netflix shows released this spring are still awaiting word on their fates. There's cause for concern for all of them (except one), though more than one should receive good news.
Here are three Netflix shows currently in the running for a renewal and an additional two that should be renewed but are looking more like cases for cancellation.
The Gentlemen
Since its premiere on Netflix on March 7, Guy Ritchie's crime series The Gentlemen has not left Netflix's weekly top 10 ranking, continuing to rack up millions of hours viewed into its ninth week. In its first four days of release, the show grabbed over 1 billion minutes viewed, according to The Hollywood Reporter. From that perspective, The Gentlemen season 2 appears all but a lock. It's all up to the powers that be. Theo James said that although season 2 "wasn't genuinely discussed," an interesting idea would be necessary for a renewal. I think they could make it happen. I can't imagine Netflix would let a hit like this slip through its fingertips.
Status: Should be renewed (UPDATE: Renewed!)
Girls5eva
What seemed like such a bright, shining, new possibility for Girls5eva turned out to be... a bit underwhelming. But the titular girl group knows that feeling all too well. The former Peacock original comedy series moved to Netflix for its third season and looked all but primed to benefit from the coveted "Netflix bump." However, somehow the series never even made it into the daily top 10 in the United States. It's a bit odd considering how much love and conversation it receives online. By this metric of disappointing viewership, Girls5eva could be in danger of being canceled by Netflix. Selfishly, I adore this show and can't part with it. A fourth and final season could still be in the cards.
Status: Should be renewed... but could be canceled
3 Body Problem
Just like The Gentlemen, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss' sci-fi thriller 3 Body Problem was quite the hit upon its release on March 21. By the end of March, the series had raked in nearly 2 billion viewing minutes, and even now in almost mid-May, the show continues to rank on Netflix's weekly top 10. As of this writing (on May 10), Netflix has not formally announced 3 Body Problem season 2, though the creators have spoken about already working on the second season. Still, there's numbers to crunch as it's a very expensive show to make. Those numbers better be crunching in the right direction, and I think they will, because a sudden cancellation would be another slap in the face from the streamer to genre fans.
Status: Should be renewed (UPDATE: Renewed!)
Dead Boy Detectives
Following its April 25 premiere on Netflix, Dead Boy Detectives debuted on the streamer's weekly top 10 ranking at No. 2 with 3.1 million views. That was behind phenomenon Baby Reindeer's 22 million views. The shows really aren't comparable since ones is a limited series that's going viral and the other is a teen supernatural detective series. In week 2, the show grew to 4.7 million views, though it's still trailing behind the usual marker that Netflix looks at for a renewal. I would love for Netflix to take a chance on Dead Boy Detectives season 2 rather than constantly mining for huge hits, but we have been through situations like this before with the streamer. Hope for the best, emotionally prepare for a cancellation.
Status: Should be renewed... but could be canceled (UPDATE: Canceled!)
Bridgerton
Yes, Bridgerton has already been renewed past its third season, releasing in May and June 2024. Bridgerton season 4 has been confirmed for quite some time and looks to be gearing up for production very soon. But we know that executive producer Shonda Rhimes still has the intention of bringing all eight books to life on Netflix, and there's no signs of the series declining in popularity. By the time season 3 wraps airing, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Netflix to announce the start season 4 filming along with a renewal for season 5 and possibly 6. It's the surest bet of them all for renewal. It's not a matter of "if," it's a matter of "when."
