A new year brings new worries for Netflix fans. Will your favorite show be renewed or canceled? Will that show you just started binge-watching not return for another season? How many established shows will have their final seasons this year or even next year? There's already a fair bit we know about the Netflix shows that have been renewed so far in 2024.
On Jan. 7, Netflix wasted no time to announce the first renewal of the year. The Korean horror-drama series Gyeongseong Creature landed a second season renewal just a few weeks after its initial premiere on Netflix in December 2023. Now fans don't have to worry about the suspenseful series never coming back with more episodes. What a great start to the year!
Unfortunately, the first cancellation of the year came in the form of the action-comedy series Obliterated. Netflix announced the cancellation news on Feb. 1, and for some fans, the show being canceled will come as quite the shock since it appeared to perform well upon its premiere in November 2023. However, Netflix often weighs the pros and cons for renewal based on its cost versus its viewership, which could have likely played a factor here.
Still, a number of popular Netflix shows have already landed renewals back in 2023, such as the new hit teen drama series My Life with the Walter Boys. The late-year smash grabbed a season 2 pickup before the end of 2023, and so did other shows like Black Mirror, Unstable, and Queer Eye among many, many more favorites.
Since we already know of dozens of renewals, Netflix has also already designated a handful of shows that will come to an end with their final seasons. Sadly, this handful includes some massive phenomenons like Stranger Things and Cobra Kai. On the brightside, Netflix hasn't yet dropped the axe on any shows so far in 2024, so that's something to celebrate.
Shows renewed in 2024
In 2023, Netflix was impressively generous when it came to renewing its original shows. The Night Agent, The Diplomat, FUBAR, and XO, Kitty were among the freshman series that scored second season and plenty more of the streamer's shows nabbed additional seasons.
Going into 2024, we'll be keeping an eye on the carry-over shows from 2023 yet to be renewed as well as the fate of the shows that premiere and drop new seasons throughout the year. Here's which shows have been renewed so far:
- Renewed: Gyeongseong Creature season 2
- Renewed: Single's Inferno season 4
- Renewed: Survival of the Thickest season 2
- Renewed: Money Heist: Berlin season 2
- Renewed: Pokémon Concierge
Shows canceled in 2024
Just before the end of 2023, Netflix finally revealed the fates of some shows that hadn't gotten word on a renewal or cancellation. Glamorous and Shadow and Bone were two of the shows to be canceled, but there are still a few shows from the previous year awaiting word on their future. The romantic-comedy series Survival of the Thickest starring Michelle Buteau ended up being renewed for season 2, though Netflix officially canceled Obliterated after one season.
Here are the shows officially canceled in 2024 so far:
- Canceled: Obliterated
- Canceled: Ratched
- Canceled: The Brothers Sun
Shows ending in 2024
As mentioned above, a handful of shows will be ending in 2024 (or 2025 keeping the strike delays in mind) after being previously announced to be returning for final seasons. Of course, Stranger Things season 5 will be the last season of the landmark series, though we might be waiting until 2025 to say our goodbyes.
Other shows will definitely be bidding their farewells in 2024, like Sweet Tooth and Vikings: Valhalla. Stay tuned for additional titles that might be announced throughout the year. Here are the shows we know for sure are ending so far:
- Big Mouth (ending with season 8)
- Cobra Kai (ending with season 6)
- Elite (ending with season 8)
- Stranger Things (ending with season 5; likely premiering in 2025)
- Sweet Tooth (ending with season 3)
- The Umbrella Academy (ending with season 4)
- Vikings: Valhalla (ending with season 3)
- You (ending with season 5)
