Dead Boy Detectives is now on Netflix and the new series is based on Neil Gaiman's comic book series and also set within The Sandman universe in addition to sharing some characters with Max's Doom Patrol. Originally, Dead Boy Detectives was planned for Max before moving to Netflix.

But now all eight episodes are out and available to binge! For those who have already zoomed through the series, we're about to discuss that climactic ending that resulted in the death of one of the show's most beloved characters.

Major spoilers ahead for Dead Boy Detectives

At the end of Dead Boy Detectives season 1, Crystal and Niko must work together to rescue Charles and Edwin after they get kidnapped by the antagonistic child-eating witch Esther Finch. While they are ultimately successful in freeing Edwin and defeating Esther, their victory comes with an terrible price. Esther kills Niko in the skirmish.

Or does she?

Niko is established as dead by the end, with Jenny even commenting that her body will be returned to her mom in Japan. But Niko also died holding a bear-shaped lucky charm gifted to her by Tragic Mick.

In the final moments of the eighth episode, viewers are taken to an arctic landscape with an igloo occupied by three people. Two are the dandelion sprites Niko had been keeping in a bell jar, Kitty and Lingham, and the third person is unidentified but heavily implied to be Niko because they're shown holding the same bear charm.

The question is, where are they and how did they get there? It seems like the sprites might have somehow saved Niko in combination with the charm and potentially taken her somewhere. I thought it was interesting that for the first time, Kitty and Lingham were both the same size as the third person. So, is it possible all three of them are inside a snow globe or something?

Either that or the sprites have grown to be full-sized people, but since they're sprites that seems unlikely. My guess is that Niko is now sprite-sized for whatever reason or they're trapped in some strange alternate dimension. We already know they exist because Esther was temporarily in one previously this season.

Additionally, actress Yuyu Kitamura who plays Niko, confirmed with Collider that the person in the igloo is Niko and she's not dead, though we obviously don't know where she is yet.

"It’s always nice to know that I’m not dead and I get to come back. That was my first thought. "

It's far too early to know if Netflix will renew Dead Boy Detectives for a second season, but the finale clearly sets up multiple storylines for the future if that happens, including the Night Nurse now being stuck on Earth and working alongside the ghosts in London. Jenny has also relocated to London alongside Crystal due to Esther blowing up her butcher shop.

Stay tuned to Netflix Life for more details on the series and updates on its possible future!
