Leanne just became an award-winning series following season 2's release

There's some big celebrations in order for Leanne and its fans. It's time to break out the Jell-O salad and do the opposite of take to the bed. Following the release of the Netflix original sitcom's second season, Leanne Morgan's eponymous comedy just added some big bragging rights to its list of achievements with its first Emmy Award win.

After the sitcom released its debut season last summer, Leanne picked up two nominations in technical categories for the 78th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Before the official ceremony takes place on Sunday, Sept. 14, the Creative Arts Emmys were held across two nights the week before, which resulted in Leanne landing its first big win.

Leanne becomes an Emmy Award winning series

While most fans might not hear about this particular win, it's an amazing feat that should be celebrated. Leanne won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Multi-Camera Comedy Series, which recognized the work of Russell Griffin. That's the third consecutive win for Griffin, having also won in 2024 and 2025 for How I Met Your Father and Frasier.

In addition to the show's big win for Picture Editing, Leanne's first season was also nominated for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Program (Half-Hour), highlighting the work of Francoise Cherry-Cohen, Gail L. Russell, and Ann Shea. Unfortunately, the series didn't go two for two this time around, but there's no doubt season 2 could pick up more nominations next year.

Since the Emmy Awards have become increasingly competitive, especially in the comedy categories, with the rapid increase of original content across the streaming services, most multi-cam comedies and other series that don't get recognition in the major categories tend to shine in the technical ones.

Obviously, it would be wonderful if Leanne Morgan, Kristen Johnston, the cast, the writers, and more of the series' incredibly deserving creative team earned awards recognition, but being in the conversation at all is still a triumph. We can still hope for some more appreciation, though.

In order to receive more recognition though, Leanne will need to be renewed for a third season by Netflix. The second season's release resulted in an unmistakable viewership decline that could put the potential of a renewal in jeopardy. After the sitcom failed to debut on the Global Top 10 ranking, it's more at risk of being canceled than ever, but there's still hope for the show to return.

The criteria for renewal for comedy series can be a bit more forgiving, since a show like Leanne, a multi-camera sitcom, isn't nearly as expensive to produce as Netflix's big-budget, star-studded drama series. Now with an Emmy win under its belt, the sitcom has another entry in the "pro" column as the streamer decides the fate of season 3.

Before Netflix shared its decision, Morgan has already shared her hopes for the show's future, including the her dream guest stars and who she hopes to romance (hint: she picked a rom-com star and her current on-screen love interest). We'll have to keep watching the series and our fingers crossed, both in hopes of a third season and to celebrate the Emmy win!
