Leanne season 3 could be in danger after disappointing season 2 ratings update

There's an unfortunate update to share with Leanne fans following the sitcom's highly anticipated return for its second season. Although excitement has been at an all-time high for the comedy from Chuck Lorre to continue with a third season, the Netflix sitcom's opening viewership numbers aren't making a particularly great case for that to happen.

Unfortunately, in its first four days of release on Netflix, Leanne season 2 failed to make a debut on the Global Top 10 English-Language Shows ranking. That means, the sitcom earned less than the 2.2 million views that the No. 10 show, Love Is Blind UK season 3, earned within the same timeframe. The series also fell way below season 1's debut viewership of 2.7 million views.

Leanne season 2 completely misses the Global Top 10

During the week of Aug. 24 through Aug. 30, the top Netflix show globally was the new documentary series Death of the Pastor's Wife with 19 million views closely followed by fellow new release Beauty in Black season 3 with 13 million views. The fact that Leanne season 2 didn't debut in the Global Top 10 ranking puts the sitcom in danger of cancellation, though there's still some hope.

Even though Leanne might not be especially popular around the world with Netflix viewers, the sitcom has been putting up a decent showing in the United States. Leanne Morgan's comedy has been within the first five positions of the daily Top 10 in the US since its release on Aug. 27, meaning American viewers have been watching season 2 and catching up with season 1.

Also a positive in the case of Leanne season 3 is the fact that the series is a multi-cam comedy that's relatively inexpensive to produce. While a comedy series like The Hawk or Nobody Wants This might be on the pricier side due to its A-list talent and on-location production, Leanne can be made with a shoestring budget more in line with Netflix's Shane Gillis workplace comedy Tires.

Gillis' series reached No. 5 in last week's Global Top 10 ranking then completely fell off the list, but in between that time, Netflix renewed the series for a fourth season. See, there's some hope that this isn't the end of the road for Leanne season 3. But it's still not particularly promising for a renewal to actually happen without making an appearance on the all-important global ranking.

It's understandably challenging for Netflix to continue to bet on shows that simply aren't bringing in a certain amount of views, and when a show aren't hitting its marks, that's when we get into the tricky position of our favorite shows getting canceled. While Leanne could very well be in contention for cancellation after its disappointing season 2 debut, you can never say never.

Netflix could opt to renew Morgan's sitcom for a third and final season to wrap up the storylines, though the second season ended with enough closure that it could double as a series finale. Still, the streamer takes other factors into consideration, like financials and completion rate, when mulling over renewal decisions. Leanne season 3 isn't out of the game but it's not out of the woods yet.
