We’re less than a week away from the release of The Umbrella Academy season 3! The popular Netflix series ended on a major cliffhanger last we saw our favorite Hargreeves siblings, and so much is at stake as we enter the new season. It’s no surprise fans are waiting at the edge of their seats for new episodes, as this show has everything you could want out of television. It’s hilarious, action-packed, heartwarming, and unpredictable.
The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book of the same name written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. It premiered on Netflix back in 2019 and received critical acclaim almost immediately. Needless to say, this show is a staple for the streamer and we’re all so excited to check out the new season!
Ahead of The Umbrella Academy season 3, here’s everything you need to know to be prepared for what’s bound to be an epic binge-watch session.
The Umbrella Academy season 2 recap
The Umbrella Academy season 2 takes place in 1960s Dallas, Texas, as the siblings find themselves in a new time period apart from one another. They begin to start new lives, with Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) finding love with a man named Ray (Yusuf Gatewood) during the Civil Rights Movement and Viktor (Elliot Page) — formerly known in seasons 1-2 as Vanya — now living with a married couple as they try to remember what happened to them.
Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) realizes he has to stop the apocalypse again, while Klaus (Robert Sheehan) starts a cult and struggles with his love for Dave (Cody Ray Thompson). As for Luther (Tom Hopper), he’s kind of all over the place in season 2, dealing with his feelings for Allison and doing what he can to try and save the world.
And Diego (David Castañeda) has one of the most interesting storylines in season 2, as he finds himself in a mental asylum and strikes up a relationship with a fellow inmate named Lila (Ritu Arya).
The Umbrella Academy season 2 ends with the siblings coming together to have an epic battle against the Commission. They realize, because of her powers and her traumatic childhood, that Lila is actually one of them. The last moments of the finale see them time travel to the future to their present-day, and they think everything’s back to normal again. But they’re sadly mistaken, as their home is actually inhabited by The Sparrow Academy — Reginald’s kids in this new timeline.
What is The Umbrella Academy season 3 about?
The upcoming season takes place right where we left off at the end of season 2, with the Umbrella Academy getting home and realizing they don’t actually live there anymore. Somehow, they messed up the timelines and now their reality is that the Sparrow Academy exists and Reginald is actually their dad, or so they say.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Umbrella Academy season 3 from Netflix:
"After putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday, the Umbrella Academy return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline once and for all. But after a brief moment of celebration, they realize things aren’t exactly (okay, not at all) how they left them. Enter the Sparrow Academy. Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone’s concerns. Navigating challenges, losses, and surprises of their own – and dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the Universe (something they may have caused) — now all they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?"

Is Viktor (Elliot Page) transgender in The Umbrella Academy?
When Elliot Page came out as transgender back in 2020, fans were speculating (and hoping!) that his character, formerly known in seasons 1-3 as Vanya Hargreeves, would also come out in the show. To our pleasant surprise, Netflix announced that would be the case, introducing us to Viktor Hargreeves in a new still from season 3. So yes, Page’s character now goes by Viktor in The Umbrella Academy season 3 and he is a transgender man. We’re excited to follow along with his coming out storyline in the new episodes.
