The Umbrella Academy was watched by 45 million Netflix subscribers

The Umbrella Academy is the most popular Netflix show of 2019 so far and was watched by almost 50 million subscribers in its first month.

According to a report from Deadline, Netflix announced The Umbrella Academy was seen by more than 45 million households during their latest earnings call. The Netflix original show premiered on the streaming service in February 2019, and in its first month, it was one of the most popular shows on Netflix so far this year.

Obviously, 45 million watches is a huge number for Netflix shows. It’s not the most we’ve seen for a Netflix show, but it’s up there with some of the top shows. It’s really hard, though, to put that number into context when we can’t compare it to Netflix’s full ratings. We only get a sliver of information and miss out on the big picture.

For instance, You on Netflix was watched by 40 million households, according to Netflix, in a similar timeframe for The Umbrella Academy.

Looking at this information, it proves one thing: The Umbrella Academy looked good enough in trailers and had a big enough word-of-mouth, water-cooler-talk push to get people to try to watch this series. That’s really all Netflix can hope for with their new shows. The show didn’t do it for some people, but I’m sure millions watched the first season in its opening weekend, and that’s why Umbrella Academy is coming back for season 2.

There are also complaints about how Netflix counts this data. According to the report, Netflix counts every time a subscriber watches at least 70 percent of an episode. I don’t know if, considering how it’s calculated, that is the right way to do it, but that’s how Netflix does it, and if you hadn’t been able to tell, Netflix treats all this information as a big secret.

As mentioned, The Umbrella Academy is coming back for season 2. We’re expecting the new season to be released on the streaming service in 2020. We’ll let you know more about the show’s second season when we find out.
