The Railway Men true story: What happened on Dec. 2, 1984?

Late on December 2, 1984, in Bhopal, India, a night turned into a nightmare as the Union Carbide pesticide plant unleashed a toxic cloud of methyl isocyanate (MIC). This deadly mix affected over 600,000 in nearby shantytowns, causing immediate deaths and triggering a frantic exodus of tens of thousands fleeing the city. The estimates of the death toll vary significantly, with the Indian government reporting around 3,500 people died within days of the gas leak, while other sources estimate the death toll to be between 15,000 and 20,000, and some even suggesting it could be as high as 25,000!

This catastrophe stemmed from the UCIL plant, which aimed to produce the pesticide Sevin using MIC. Tragically, on that fatal night, safety systems meant to prevent such disasters were non-functional. A corroded pipe, flushed by an engineer, triggered a catastrophic chain reaction, releasing the lethal cloud into the air.

The Bhopal gas tragedy remains a haunting chapter in history, among the world’s worst industrial disasters. Beyond the immediate horror, its impact lingers. Many survivors and their descendants grapple with chronic health issues, while high instances of birth defects persist to this day.

Beyond the human toll, the environmental repercussions were profound, contaminating soil and water sources, and affecting the ecosystem for years to come. Despite the scale of the tragedy, legal accountability and justice have remained elusive for many affected by this devastating event.
