In danger: All American

Number of seasons: 1

What it’s about: All American is based on a true story of a black student joining a predominantly all-white school because of his football skills. Where there, he faces the problems with the class system and expectations, while also trying to remain connected to his friends at his old school.

Why it’s in danger: In short, it’s all about the ratings. All American was the only fall show (that wasn’t already confirmed to be ending) not to get an early renewal. It’s fellow freshman shows did get picked up for a second season, which immediately put doubts in many minds that this high school football show would be renewed.

The live ratings haven’t been as strong as the network would have hoped. While it did see a big pick-up around the third episode, the show is still one of the weakest on the network and that means problems for advertisers.

Of course, we don’t know what the CW app ratings are like, but it’s clear from the decision not to renew early that they can’t be great. However, there is some hope.

Chances of being renewed: I think the chances are pretty slim for All American, but it’s really going to depend on Netflix views. One thing The CW knows is that many fans like to watch its shows on-demand or via streaming services. The deal between the network and Netflix has been one of the best things to happen for both companies.

Netflix is the reason shows like Dynasty have lasted as long as they have. Who else saw the show getting renewed for a second season, let alone the most recent third? The problem is All American isn’t on the streaming platform yet to get the early renewal that its fellow freshman shows, Charmed and Legacies, got (their live ratings were better).

If All American proves to be successful on Netflix (and internationally) there is a chance that the show will be renewed. However, with talks of CW shows leaving the streaming service soon, we could find that the high school football series doesn’t get a chance.
