Yes, The Gentlemen season 3 is happening despite season 2 viewership decline

After an amazing summer of great original content on Netflix, the streaming service ushered in the start of the fall season with a highly anticipated series return. The Gentlemen had been away from viewers for well over two years, making the Sept. 3 premiere of season 2 one of the biggest releases of the year so far. But looking at the season's debut ratings, you wouldn't think so.

For The Gentlemen season 2's first four days of availability on Netflix, during the the Aug. 31 through Sept. 6 timeframe, the eight-episode season debuted in the No. 3 position on the Global Top 10 English-Language TV Shows ranking with 6.7 million views. Unfortunately, that's a nearly 50% decline in viewership compared to the debut of the first season back in March 2024.

The Gentlemen season 2's declined viewership isn't impacting season 3

Upon the Guy Ritchie crime comedy-drama's premiere, the series attracted 12.2 million views for the same four-day time period. The Gentlemen season 2 also dropped in viewership in the UK, though only by 15%. You could chalk up the steep decrease in eyeballs to the over two-year wait or a delay in fans beginning (and/or completing) their binge-watches, but no matter how many views The Gentlemen shed in between seasons, Netflix still renewed the series for season 3.

The Gentlemen fans might have missed the exciting season 3 renewal since Netflix announced the big news before the release of season 2. The renewal came in tandem with the official season 2 trailer, which was all seemingly overshadowed by the rumors that Meghan Markle was in talks to join the show as she pursued a return to acting. (Theo James has mostly shot those down.)

Whenever Netflix releases a new original series or drops a new season of fan-favorite hits, fans are always left wondering whether there will be another season. Usually, we're left waiting for a few weeks or even months after the show hits our watch lists, but in the case of The Gentlemen, its third season was confirmed ahead of time, which is why some viewers might still be in the dark.

Even though The Gentlemen season 2 marked a decline in viewership, that's not always a bad sign for Netflix original series. If you take a look at the daily Top 10 in the United States, the show still ranks in the No. 2 position as of Friday, Sept. 11, proving that while it might have made a splashy debut two years ago, it's longtail viewership could be more powerful this time around.

The Gentlemen season 3 will be released on Netflix much sooner than two years after season 2, which should certainly help avoid the viewership from plummeting any further next time around. With the renewal, we also received confirmation that production was looking to begin "imminently," potentially before the end of the year. Hopefully, Eddie and Susie will be back sometime in 2027.

In the second season finale, Eddie grappled with the obvious murder of his wife Bella and the hit that was clearly placed on his head. He sought the truth about who plotted Bella's death and looked to also kill him, reaffirming his alliance with Susie and learning that his brother, Freddy, was the one seeking revenge. Eddie's violent twist against Freddy set the stage for a darker season 3.
