Sweet Magnolias season 6 remains at risk three months after season 5

As the saying goes, no news is good news. But is that really the case when it comes to television renewals? Typically, the longer a series goes without getting an official pick-up from its network or streaming service, the more likely fans should prepare for bad news. When it comes to the case of Sweet Magnolias, no news might not actually be good news.

The fan-favorite Netflix original romantic drama series returned for its fifth season in June 2026, over one year after the fourth season arrived the year before. Sweet Magnolias season 5 premiered to little fanfare and significantly declined viewership, which had fans concerned that season 6 might not be in the cards after all. Each day that passes, fans gets more worried.

Netflix still hasn't renewed or canceled Sweet Magnolias

Since Sweet Magnolias season 5 dropped on June 11, 2026, three months have officially passed. We are now getting into mid-September without any news or updates on season 6. That's not an especially good sign of confidence from Netflix, which likely would have renewed the series right away if the viewership had been stronger. But that's sadly not the case here.

Still, it's not exactly a death knell either that Netflix has stayed mum on the show's future. The streaming service renewed the fifth season two month after the fourth season season, and the fourth season was announced three months after the third season's release. Netflix's previous cadence for announcing renewals for Sweet Magnolias is at least hope that it's not the end of the road yet.

In early August 2026, Sweet Magnolias star Logan Allen, who plays Kyle Townsend in the series, spoke with fans on Instagram Live and revealed his hope that Netflix would make an announcement about season 6 or the show's fate by the end of August 2026. Well, August has come and gone and there was no renewal (or cancellation). Unfortunately, his prediction was incorrect.

Netflix could share Sweet Magnolias at any moment, whether it's good or bad. The series could be outright canceled, renewed for a sixth season, or renewed for a sixth season that's also the final season. Those are the three possibilities that are on the table for the series depending on how the streamer feels about the trajectory of its longevity.

It's hard not to compare Sweet Magnolias to fellow Netflix original romantic drama series Virgin River, which returns for season 8 in 2027 and already has rumblings of season 9 being in the works. Sweet Magnolias wasn't included in the first edition of a new small-town TV convention that's centered around Virgin River and taking place in Nashville this fall, which could mean nothing.

On the bright side, Sweet Magnolias is in good company with the Netflix shows that are still on the bubble. Man on Fire, Ransom Canyon, The Hawk, and XO, Kitty are among the series still awaiting renewals or cancellations from the streaming service months after they premiered or their latest seasons dropped. Hopefully, there's some good news in store for at least some of these titles.
