Sweet Magnolias fans should begin preparing for bad news from Netflix

After the release of season 5, Netflix could be ready to deliver some bittersweet Sweet Magnolias season 6 news to fans.

We have finally returned to Serenity, South Carolina with the release of Sweet Magnolias season 5 on Netflix this June. The new season brings back the cozy romantic drama series to fans after over a year away, and the latest episodes delivered all of the drama and heartwarming moments we have come to expect. Hopefully, we'll have another chance to pour it out with the Sweet Magnolias.

In the fifth season, Maddie's new job in marketing took her from her hometown and family for a once in a lifetime opportunity in New York City. Back home in Serenity, her friends and family continued to navigate complicated relationships as Helen prepared to walk down the aisle and Dana Sue saw her daughter Annie graduating from high school. Season 5 was a big season of change.

After finishing your Sweet Magnolias season 5 binge-watch, your next natural question won't just be what happens next but will we get to see what happens next? Everyone wants to know whether season 6 will happen, and as of the season 5 release, Netflix hasn't formally renewed the series, though we have a feeling that news could potentially be of the bittersweet variety.

Sweet Magnolias season 6 could be the last season of the show

While series creator Sheryl J. Anderson didn't craft the season 5 ending to double as a potential series finale, the showrunner tends to end most of Sweet Magnolias' seasons with a bit of closure. Being so, season 5 didn't end with any major twists, which could lead some viewers to wonder whether there's even a sixth season planned from the powers that be.

Fortunately for fans, Anderson didn't envision season 5 as the end of the series, as she explained to Deadline, "I actually think some of our cliffhangers are pretty big but, beyond the ritual of ending with a toast, we always strive to give our audience a balance between the tension of the open questions." Those questions being about who might leave and whose relationship might not last.

"I think maybe in some cases, the emotional satisfaction and the joy is greater than the open questions, but the open questions are certainly there, and we certainly have big thoughts about, if we are lucky enough to get another season, the stories that we will tell," Anderson continued.

As you can see, Anderson hopes that Sweet Magnolias season 6 will happen, and judging by the performance of the fifth season so far (the season debuted at No. 2 on the daily Top 10 most-watched shows ranking in the United States), it's definitely in contention for renewal. Especially as a long-running series that's beloved by millions of fans around the world.

But because it's a long-running show, that's why we're fearful that Sweet Magnolias could be reaching the end of the road. If Netflix opts to renew the show for a sixth season, there's a decent chance that the streaming service could choose to make this the last hurrah, one final season for the road and one last chance to pour it out with the Sweet Magnolias. Of course, that's just a prediction.

Recently, Netflix has been handing out final season renewals left and right. The streamer renewed two of its procedural drama hits, The Night Agent and The Lincoln Lawyer for fourth and sixth seasons respectively, and those will be the final seasons. Another fan-favorite worldwide hit, Emily in Paris season 6 was also confirmed as the final run for the Emmy-nominated romantic comedy.

It's not impossible that Sweet Magnolias could join the list of Netflix shows that have been renewed for a final season simply based on the streamer's current trend. But when you look at Virgin River, which is soon returning for season 8 and could have more life in it, you never know what the future could. As they say, hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
