It’s been a long couple of weeks for Sweet Magnolias fans, but it seems the wait for answers may be coming to an end soon.
After Sweet Magnolias season 5 debuted on June 11, fans anticipated that Netflix would announce a sixth season within a week or two after the fifth season’s debut. Much to their surprise, Netflix has kept fans in the dark about the show’s future and taken a very different approach this season.
Rather than renewing Sweet Magnolias shortly after its latest premiere, Netflix has decided to take a wait-and-see approach to the season. No writers’ room was opened for season 6 ahead of season 5’s premiere, and Netflix has been radio silent about the show’s future despite having weeks' worth of viewership numbers to now take into account.
While renewals at Netflix are never a guarantee, Sweet Magnolias fans never anticipated that the show’s future would be left in limbo. With each passing week, fans have grown more and more concerned about whether a sixth season will happen, but it sounds like there might finally be a light at the end of the tunnel.
During his latest Instagram Live, Sweet Magnolias star Logan Allen was asked by a fan whether there will be more episodes of the show. Although he admitted he hopes there will be more episodes, he confirmed no decision has been made just yet regarding the show’s future. However, he did suggest that a decision could be imminent.
“I hope so. Nothing’s been confirmed yet; we have not gotten picked up for a season 6 just yet. We’re waiting on news. We’ll probably know by the end of August, is my guess. Keep watching the show, keep supporting it, keep DM’ing Netflix. DM Netflix, ‘Be like, give us a season 6; we need it.’ Then we’ll see what happens,” Allen revealed.
So it seems that the clock might be ticking down and Netflix will have to make a decision soon. Allen did not give any context as to why he believes a decision will be made by the end of August, but there is a good chance it could be related to cast contracts. Knowing that we’re nearly two months removed from the season 5 release date, there is a chance that the cast contracts could be nearing expiration and that Netflix will need to make a decision about season 6 before the deals expire.
Hopefully, when news comes through, it will be good news for the show. We’re really hoping Netflix will give the show a sixth season, even if season 6 ends up being announced as a final season for Sweet Magnolias. This certainly feels like a show with many more seasons in the tank, but we’d rather get a proper ending for the show than to see it canceled outright by Netflix without a final season to resolve outstanding storylines and craft a well-deserved sendoff for the series.
