Ransom Canyon season 3 might be in real trouble following worrisome ratings update

There's no doubt that Ransom Canyon season 2 was one of the many highlights of Netflix's summer lineup. The Western romantic drama series based on the book by Jodi Thomas returned for its second season in July 2026 to much excitement among its most devoted fans. But taking a closer look at its ratings performance during its first three weeks of release tells a different story.

After its opening weekend, which gave season 2 four days of availability to be binge-watched, the series already had its chances of coming back for another season at risk. Ransom Canyon returned to significantly fewer viewers compared to season 1. The second season debuted at No. 3 on Netflix's Global Top 10 with 4.1 million views, a 43% decline from the first season's opening.

Ransom Canyon's cancellation odds just got more concerning

Now in it's third week, Ransom Canyon season 2 remains on Netflix's Global Top 10 English TV Shows, though now in the No. 5 position with 2.7 million views and 16.8 million hours viewed. That's another decrease from week 2's slight uptick to the No. 2 position on the ranking with 5.5 million views and 33.8 hours viewed. Season 1 even charted again last week at No. 5. But is it enough?

That's the million-dollar question surrounding Ransom Canyon season 3's chances of coming to fruition right now. A lot of Netflix original series have seen sizable drops in viewership between their first and second seasons and still managed to score a renewal for a third season. Many factors are in play, some of which are top-secret Netflix data that isn't accessible to consumers.

Shortly after season 2's release, showrunner April Blair revealed that she already has plans for season 3 and the writer's room had begun working on stories and scripts. Blair's update has been the biggest vote of confidence that Netflix will move forward with Ransom Canyon season 3 despite the lukewarm ratings. After all, it's a niche series as a Western romantic drama.

In all honesty, the viewership numbers for most Netflix original series released in 2026 have paled in comparison to the numbers that His & Hers, Bridgerton, and I Will Find You have posted. There have been varying degrees of viewership impact, and success looks different from show to show. Because Ransom Canyon is a mid-budget series, it might have lower bars to clear in order to remain on the air.

On the bright side, the fact that the first season returned to the global leaderboard, the fact that it's still in the Global Top 10, and the fact that it's also still in the daily Top 10 in the United States going on one month later are all positive signs. Naturally, this means that the fans who are watching are finishing the show, and completion rate is one of the most important boxes to check.

All things considered, Ransom Canyon season 3 isn't a guarantee just yet and unfortunately remains on the list of the many Netflix shows that could be canceled next. There's no saying what direction things will go in yet, but keep your fingers crossed for good news.
