Despite landing in the No. 1 position on the Netflix daily Top 10 in the United States, Ransom Canyon season 2 didn't quite have the same luck on the streamer's Global Top 10. The Western romantic drama's second season is off to a seemingly slower start than its first, debuting in the No. 3 position after its release on July 23 and subsequent first four days of availability.
Netflix revealed that Ransom Canyon season 2 brought in 4.1 million views in its opening weekend, starting its run behind I Will Find You, which spends its fifth consecutive week at No. 1, and Will Ferrell's comedy The Hawk still at No. 2. Unfortunately, the drama's premiere ratings for its follow-up season mark a 43% decline in viewership, meaning season 3 isn't quite a slam dunk.
Ransom Canyon season 3 renewal odds just got confusing
Over the past year or so, fans and critics have noticed that the second seasons of Netflix's original series have continuously turned in a rather significant decline in views after hit first seasons. There's really no consensus from the streamer as to why this happens or what it means at large, but from the viewer's point of view, it makes the renewal odds of their favorite shows difficult to predict.

Ransom Canyon debuted with 7.2 million views back in April 2025 and rose to 9.4 million views in its second week. The first season's third week brought in 4.2 million views, which is still more than season 2's debut weekend numbers. It's mildly concerning to say that least, but as you can see, most shows tend to rise in views by week 2 due to the increase in days that are calculated in the data.
But the views don't tell the full story, even if the data that's made available to subscribers can seem like the be all, end all for a show's future. Netflix considers far more than views when it comes to renewing or canceling a series. There's also the completion rate and financial variables, both of which consumers don't have access to. Additionally, Nielsen ratings numbers can also impact a renewal.
Perhaps one factor in Ransom Canyon season 2's slower-than-expected start can be pointed toward the fact that there are only eight episodes this time around, two fewer than the show's debut season. Because Netflix measures the views compared to a shows runtime, there's less time to work with this season. But fewer episodes could also arguable positively impact the completion rate.
Season 3 isn't off the table just yet
There are a lot of positives in play when it comes to Ransom Canyon season 3 getting an official renewal from Netflix. First and foremost, fans love the show and express that love online. But it's also an inexpensive show for Netflix to produce, in spite of having big names like Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, and Patricia Clarkson on board. The show doesn't require extensive, expensive special effects.
Not to mention, Ransom Canyon showrunner April Blair has already revealed that she's back in the writer's room working on scripts for season 3. Now, that doesn't equate to an official renewal and could still result in a cancellation from Netflix. Still, it's a bigger vote of confidence that the streamer intends to move forward with than show than if Blair was waiting around to get started.
Netflix has carved out a niche of successful, lower budget romantic dramas like Virgin River and Sweet Magnolias, which Ransom Canyon fits right into. While the series might be the latest victim of the mysterious Netflix season 2 ratings decline anomaly, there's no real reason that the streamer shouldn't continue to bet on the show. With the right promotion, it could be even bigger.
