Production finally begins on Netflix's adaptation of beloved This Summer Will Be Different

If you’re looking for another book adaptation from Netflix, get your tissues ready because we are getting the updates we need—as in a production update.

A press release from Netflix officially confirmed that production of the book adaptation of This Summer Will Be Different has begun! The new television series is based on the novel of the same name by New York Times bestselling Canadian author Carley Fortune.

The show has begun filming on Prince Edward Island and in Toronto, Canada. The series is classified as a “simmering, sun-soaked romance” that takes place across years during “multiple summers" as a young woman tries to figure out what she wants in life while navigating her relationship with her best friend’s brother.

The series itself already had stars Sophie Nélisse, Francesca Reale, and Roby Attal as the main leads. Still, the press release confirmed several new cast members, including Jordan Rodrigues as Miles Lam, Jude Wilson as Zach, Natalie Brown as Christine, James Tupper as Ken, Tom Barnett as Peter, and Celia Owen as Joy.

This Summer Will Be Different will have ten episodes and even has Fortune as an executive producer. We don’t know when it will be released, so we don't expect it with any upcoming 2026 shows. But we might get lucky in 2027. I smell a summer release.

That being said, this is part of a long line of book adaptations that Netflix has been producing over the last few years, and the fact that Carley Fortune’s book is joining the ranks means a lot. As a book lover, I’m over the moon and have a feeling I’ll be fed for a long, long time.

Some other popular authors are getting adaptations over at Netflix, such as Emily Henry. Her novel People We Meet on Vacation had a very successful adaptation earlier in the year. More adaptations of her novels will arrive on the platform eventually.

Another YA adaptation, Better Than The Movies, just cast two of its leads, and I’m sure it’ll only be a matter of time before we see more news around that. Then there is the huge adaptation that has been in the works at Netflix for some time, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, which recently landed a new director. So it’s not like Netflix isn’t making serious progress with all these adaptations.

That does beg the question, though — if we’re really diving deep into these popular books getting adapted, are they all going to be good? Only time will really tell. I personally enjoyed People We Meet On Vacation, but some fans of the book did not. I can only think that this might be the case with This Summer Will Be Different.

This also isn’t the first time a Carley Fortune book has been adapted, with Every Summer After recently receiving an Amazon Prime adaptation that many fans also didn’t particularly like. Let’s hope Netflix gets this one right.
