It's been a while since Netflix had some exciting news to share about its forthcoming The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo film adaptation. As one of the most highly anticipated Netflix movies, any news on the project has been on everyone's wish list, but there's finally a development that will have fans of the book thrilled beyond belief. You could say it's pitch perfect.

Since Netflix scored the rights to the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid back in 2022, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo movie has been in active development. While the adaptation will be handled by writer Liz Tigelaar, the film has struggled to maintain a director at the helm. However, Netflix just announced an A-lister as the film's new director.

Anna Kendrick set as The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo director

Academy Award-nominated actress Anna Kendrick will follow-up her directorial debut Woman of the Hour with Netflix's The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo movie adaptation. Kendrick steps into the director's chair after the departures of Maggie Betts and Leslye Headland, the latter of whom announced that she left the project early last year. But Kendrick's addition is great news!

As of the announcement of Kendrick taking over directorial duties, there's no word on whether she will also appear onscreen and act in the film. There's no doubt the star's fans will definitely want to watch her step into this world whether in a small or major role, but casting reveals have not been made at this time in the development process.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo reteams Kendrick with Netflix, the platform that bought and distributed her directorial debut. Netflix purchased Woman of the Hour at the Toronto International Film Festival for a whopping $11 million and premiered the movie in October 2024. The film was a critical and viewership success, which clearly had the streamer aiming to score Kendrick's next movie. According to Deadline, Kendrick read scripts and chose this one.

In the book, a journalist sits down with the legendary Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo as she recounts the tales of her seven marriages, and these stories include secrets about her life that hadn't been divulged. A massive best-seller, the book has been one of the most highly anticipated film adaptations, to put it lightly, and it's promising that Netflix has taken its time.

Since Netflix acquired the novel, fans have been expressing their desire for who they want to star in the movie, and the fan castings have ranged from all kinds of different talented actresses. Undoubtedly, with Kendrick in the director's chair, fans will keep their fingers crossed that she will call on some of her friends, like Brittany Snow, who's no stranger to taking over hit Netflix titles.

Now that The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has a director, we can expect the development process to move forward even more. As of this writing, there isn't a proposed timeline for production, though we can keep our fingers crossed that filming might begin before the end of the year or early next year. That's merely a prediction, but we'll keep you updated on all the latest news!
