Liam Hemsworth dropped by a recent episode of Live with Kelly and Mark to chat about his new Netflix romantic comedy movie Lonely Planet, which premieres on Oct. 11, but he shared a bit more about his future appearances on the streaming service. Yes, we're talking about his upcoming role as Geralt in The Witcher season 4, which he takes over from Henry Cavill.
During his appearance on the talk show, Hemsworth told Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos that prior to taking the role of Geralt from Cavill, who departed the series after season 3, he hadn't read the books that inspired the Netflix show and he hadn't even watched The Witcher. However, he was familiar with the video game, which inspired him to dive into the books and show before beginning his role.
Obviously, fans of The Witcher might have mixed emotions about the changes coming up for the series in season 4, including Cavill's recasting with Hemsworth and the fact that the forthcoming season will lead into the fifth and final season. Thankfully, Hemsworth comes baring insight into when we can expect season 4 to wrap filming and season 5 to begin filming.
The Witcher season 5 filming picks up after season 4 wrap
While chatting on Live with Kelly and Mark, Hemsworth both revealed and confirmed what we knew, that he has been filming The Witcher season 4 "for the past nine months." Production on the season began earlier this year, and according to the actor, filming will wrap on the fourth season in late October 2024 after "three more weeks." Season 4 will release in 2025.
Following a four-month break in production, Hemsworth says that The Witcher team will reunite in early 2025 to kick off another eight months of filming for The Witcher season 5. Filming on the final season could begin in about February 2025 if everything goes as planned, which will have season 5 on pace for a release in 2026... but let's not think about 2026 right now!
It's great for fans to hear that there likely won't be a massive wait in between seasons 4 and 5. So far, there has been a two-year wait in between every single season. The first season premiered in December 2019, the second in December 2021, and the third in two parts in June and July 2023. While we'd hoped for a season 4 release in 2024, that's not possible with filming ongoing.
On top of filming still needing to wrap in fall 2024, The Witcher season 4 will then enter post-production, which could take between five to six months or even more. Prepare to be patient for the show's eventual return in 2025. Until then, it's thrilling to still have another season to look forward to, as well as The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep's release in February 2025.
