Netflix delivered some fantastic news to fans of The Witcher today. Not only has production officially started on The Witcher season 4, but the streamer also announced that the series has been renewed for a fifth (and final) season. The two seasons will be filmed back-to-back and adapt the remaining books by Andrzej Sapkowski, including Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.
There have been several rumors swirling about The Witcher getting a fifth season to be filmed alongside season 4, so the news isn't that much of a shock to us diehard fans of the series, but it's still nice to get the official confirmation! We also now know that production is starting on the fourth season and can look forward to more sneak peeks as the months progress. Hopefully it won't be long now until we get to see Liamralt in all his glory!
In addition to the updates, Netflix also revealed the logline for season 4, which you can read below.
"After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire and finding one another again. "
The fourth season features directors Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (401 & 402), Tricia Brock (403 & 404), Alex Garcia Lopez (405 & 406), Jeremy Webb (407 & 408) and writers Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (401), Tania Lotia (402), Rae Benjamin (403), Troy Dangerfield (404), Matthew D'Ambrosio (405), Javier Grillo-Marxuach (406), Clare Higgins (407), Mike Ostrowski (408). Hissrich also returns as showrunner and executive producer of the series.
“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate Season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia. We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends," says The Witcher creator.
Season 4 starts production, new photos of the table read
Perhaps even more exciting than the renewal news is the photographs showing the cast together at the table read, for the first time including Liam Hemsworth who will take over the character of Geralt for Henry Cavill after the latter departed the series at the end of season 3.
Hemsworth isn't the only new addition this season, we also get our first look at Laurence Fishburne, who has been cast as Regis, the higher vampire, and Danny Woodburn, who plays Zoltan. One photo shows Fishburne in conversation with Linden Porco, another new addition to season 4.
Other images show the cast gushing over Hemsworth, who seems to be fitting in perfectly with the crew! Apart from the photos, Netflix shared an endearing behind-the-scenes video to announce the start of season 4 production and show the cast altogether at the table read.
Henry who? It looks like everyone has moved on swimmingly and there's undeniable chemistry already between Hemsworth and Chalotra and Batey.
