The Perfect Couple episode 2 recap: "She Would Never Do That"

Now that we know who the dead body is in The Perfect Couple, it's time to start sniffing out clues on who the murderer could be — if there even is one. The Netflix limited series follows a wealthy family living in Nantucket, getting ready to celebrate a wedding. But when the bride finds her best friend dead on the beach, the celebrations are put on pause. We're recapping every episode here at Netflix Life!

The second episode of The Perfect Couple, titled "She Would Never Do That," sees the Winbury family try to navigate their next move, while flashbacks add more layers to Merritt's unfortunate death.

Now that we know Amelia found her best friend Merritt's body, it's time for her to get to talking. At the police station, she claims it's all her fault. During a flashback scene from the night prior, we see Amelia and Merritt arguing on the beach. Amelia is upset that Merritt kept something from her, and Merritt cries and runs away. What is this big secret Merritt is hiding? Well...

Merritt and Tag were having an affair

The police find Merritt's phone and a man's jacket washed up on the beach, and when the detective speaks with Abby, Abby says Merritt had connections with many men. We don't know how true this is, but we do get a major reveal here. One man Merritt undoubtedly had a connection with was Tag. In another flashback, we see that Merritt is wearing the bracelet Tag bought, meaning they were having an affair. Does this mean Tag is the one who kills her? It's certainly possible, but there are other potential suspects.

Police look through the room Merritt was staying in and are interrupted by Tag, who tries to downplay the situation. He suggests Merritt died by accidental drowning, but Detective Henry isn't so sure. She tells him she thinks Merritt hit it off with one of the wedding guests which led to her death.

After spending some alone time with her parents, Amelia finds the Winbury family huddled together talking about something important. Given the family's social status, Greer says her team is telling her to release a statement. Greer even goes so far as to say they can suggest Merritt's death was suicide, something Amelia is obviously against. The whole thing is definitely sketchy, and Amelia becomes even more concerned when Benji comes to her later with an NDA to sign.

Shooter is suspicious

Benji goes to talk to his best friend Shooter and they have a strange conversation. Shooter seems very upset about Merritt, and when he's alone he calls someone, telling them he really needs to talk to him. He pulls out his passport from his drawer, suggesting he's leaving Nantucket.

The police determine the fingerprints on Merritt's phone, one of which belongs to Shooter. They try to find him and end up catching him on the ferry trying to flee town. Meanwhile, Isabel and Tom are in bed at a hotel together, and he tells her he loves her. The feeling is not mutual, however. Isabel tells him it's just an affair and nothing more.

Back at the house, Tom finds Abby packing and tells her the police won't allow them to leave. Abby says she's already talked to the police, desperate to get home to get her hair done and relax. Tom doesn't understand why she's acting this way, and they argue.

That night, Tag goes to speak with Amelia alone, telling her that he's supportive of her relationship with Benji and he doesn't want things to be awkward. He must know that she knows about the affair. He tells her that Merritt was "a very special person," which creates tension between them. What is Amelia supposed to say? She ends up driving to the police station, revealing that Merritt and Tag were sleeping together.

Merritt's other big secret

The episode ends with more quick flashbacks as the plot thickens. At the beach the night of Merritt's death, Merritt tells Amelia that she's pregnant. We also see that Greer confronted Tag about the bracelet, knowing he gifted it to Merritt. Right now, my two biggest suspects are Greer and Tag. It's totally possible that Greer found out about the affair and Merritt's pregnancy, and in order to keep up appearances, she hired someone to kill Merritt. At this point, I'm just speculating, but episode 2 definitely sets up the theory.
