The Squid Game season 2 release date is set at Netflix!

On July 31, Netflix announced the Squid Game season 2 release date is scheduled for Dec. 26, 2024. Netflix announced the news via a date announcement video. The video was shared with our team at Netflix Life via press release.

We've been expecting Squid Game season 2 to premiere on Netflix sometime in December for a few months now. Lee Jung-jae, who stars as Seong Gi-hun in the most popular Netflix series of all time, revealed that the new season was coming in December.

It totally makes sense that Squid Game season 2 is getting the Christmas release on Netflix. The streamer almost always stashes a new show to premiere right around Christmas. We've seen it with Bridgerton, Emily in Paris, You, The Witcher, and more. Well, you can add Squid Game season 2 to the list, too!

I think it's safe to say that Squid Game season 2 is going to be more popular than all of those shows. For the first season, Netflix viewers tuned in to watch more than 1.6 billion hours of the series during its first few weeks on the streaming service. Officially, as of July 28, fans have watched 2.2 billion hours of Squid Game, according to the Netflix Top 10.

Netflix also shared the synopsis for the new season in the press release:

"Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it."

In the new season, Jung-jae will be joined by returning cast members Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo in season 2, according to the press release. There's also a bunch of new cast members joining Squid Game season 2 (and season 3 if they survive!), including Park Gyu-young, Kang Ha-neul, Lee Jin-uk, Yim Si-wan, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, and many more.

You'd think the release date would be the big news of the day for Squid Game, but it's not.

Squid Game renewed for third and final season

According to Netflix, Squid Game has already been renewed for season 3, as well. Unfortunately for fans, the third season will also be the final season of the Netflix original series.

Netflix also shared a letter from Hwang Dong-hyuk announcing that the third season was happening and that it would be the end of the Squid Game story.

Back in June, we learned that production on the second and third season had already been completed, thanks to a report from the Korean outlet OSEN. At that point, that was one of the first reports we'd seen that confirmed season 3 was happening and already finished. That report was clearly accurate.

In the press release, Netflix also confirmed that Squid Game season 3 will be released sometime in 2025. That's obviously great news, too, because it's been three years since the first season was released in 2021.

Also, that's especially exciting news because, for those keeping track at home, Netflix's three biggest shows of all time, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Wednesday, will all have new seasons coming to Netflix in 2025. Netflix just confirmed during the Q2 earnings interview with Ted Sarandos that Stranger Things and Wednesday would be back for new seasons next year.

Squid Game and Stranger Things are also confirmed for final seasons next year. What an exciting year!

But, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. We still have a bunch of new Netflix shows coming later this year, capped off by Squid Game season 2 on Dec. 26. We're still quite a while away from the release of season 2, but we're going to see trailers and much more!

Stay tuned for more news about Squid Game season 2. And, while you wait, you might want to re-watch that first season on Netflix. It's been three years, after all!
