Netflix boss reveals Stranger Things season 5 is coming in 2025

We've all known Stranger Things season 5 isn't coming to Netflix in 2024 for a long time, but someone at Netflix finally went on record to confirm the release year for the most highly anticipated season of a Netflix show ever.

During the Q2 Netflix earnings call, Netflix CEO, Ted Sarandos, revealed that Stranger Things season 5 is coming in 2025.

As the call wound down, Sarandos rattled off a list of shows returning in 2024, including The Lincoln Lawyer, Virgin River, Squid Game, and more. Sarandos, then, teased the list of Netflix shows on the way in 2025, including Stranger Things season 5.

"Looking forward through 2025, you’ve got new seasons of Wednesday, Stranger Things, and The Night Agent. And, we’re in production on One Piece, so there’s a ton of excitement there just in our series."

This should really come as no surprise to fans of Stranger Things. Deadline reported that Netflix was eyeing a 2025 release for Stranger Things season 5 back in February 2024. After the writers' and actors' strikes stopped production from happening in May 2023, when production was supposed to begin, it was clear we were in for a long wait for season 5.

Production on the fifth and final season started in January 2024. The cast and crew have been working hard on the new season throughout the year.

In July 2024, Ross Duffer, co-creator of Stranger Things, shared a picture and video from the set of season 5 of the cast and crew. Duffer announced they were 24 weeks into production on the new season and officially halfway through filming.

We're writers. We're terrible at math, but we know how to do a little addition. If the cast and crew are halfway through filming Stranger Things season 5 in July, that means the new season should wrap in mid-December before moving on to post-production.

Obviously, Sarandos didn't drop the release date for Stranger Things season 5. If we're lucky, we'll find out the release window for the new season by the end of the year. It sure seems like we're going to get the new season in the summer of 2025, though. The dates just line up for that to happen. Plus, Netflix really likes to drop new seasons of Stranger Things in the summer. So far, we've seen three of the four seasons premiere during the summer. It just makes sense to expect to see Stranger Things season 5 on Netflix in July next year.
