Minka Kelly is taking over Netflix, and I personally couldn't be happier about this development. Not only will the talented actress and best-selling author co-headline Netflix's upcoming drama series Ransom Canyon, but she will also be making her Netflix romantic comedy debut with the upcoming movie Champagne Problems.

In the holiday rom-com, Kelly plays an executive who makes her way to France during the Christmas holiday season in order to score the acquisition of a lifetime with a massively successful champagne brand. (Yes, it's giving a bit of Emily in Paris with the France and champagne of it all.) But Kelly's character will happen upon a love connection with the son of the champagne brand's founder. What are the chances!

Champagne Problems comes from writer-director Mark Steven Johnson, who has also directed two popular Netflix original romantic comedy movies in the past. Johnson directed both 2020's Rachael Leigh Cook and Damon Wayans Jr. rom-com Love, Guaranteed and 2022's Kat Graham and Tom Hopper fan-favorite Love in the Villa. Clearly, the new movie is in good hands.

In its announcement of the movie, Netflix didn't share any additional casting details, but promised more information would be announced soon. Likewise, the streamer didn't indicate when Champagne Problems would begin streaming, though it's noted that the movie will be an "upcoming release." Perhaps the new movie could be part of Netflix's Christmas 2024 programming slate if production can be completed quickly, but 2025 could still be likely.

A brief aside: If the movie doesn't use either or both "Champagne Problems" by Taylor Swift (a heartbreaking piano ballad) or "Champagne Problems" by Katy Perry (a disco-pop love song), it will be a major missed opportunity. We need a lovelorn Kelly walking in wintery Paris to Swift's popular deep cut and the celebratory conclusion dancing us out with Perry's underrated banger!

As a fan of Minka Kelly since her breakthrough role in Friday Night Lights, I couldn't be more excited to watch her shine in one of Netflix's signature feel-good romantic comedies. She's one of the stars I'd always selfishly wanted to see more of onscreen, and Netflix is helping grant that wish with Champagne Problems and Ransom Canyon.

After wrapping filming on the modern Western romantic drama series in June, Kelly called the show the "best job I've ever had," and she's someone who has been in multiple productions over the course of her 20-year acting career. It's always exciting when actors find renewed love for their craft. That's always palpable onscreen, and it's going to make Ransom Canyon all the more lovable.

While the drama series looks to be eyeing a release date sometime in spring 2025 on Netflix, Kelly's new movie role could be coming to our watch list even before then or right after in fall 2025. As more information about Champagne Problems is announced by Netflix, we'll share all of the casting details and release information fans want to know. Who do you hope takes the role of Kelly's leading man?
