5 most lovable Netflix original romantic comedies of 2024 so far
By Reed Gaudens
There's something in the air at Netflix this year, and it looks a lot like love. After helping re-popularize the romantic comedy genre with fan-favorite titles like Set It Up, Always Be My Maybe, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Your Place or Mine, and more, the streaming service served up a full slate of rom-coms in 2024, and the year's not even over yet!
Netflix kicked off its biggest romantic comedy year so far in February with the Gina Rodriguez and Tom Ellis two-hander Players and continued into spring with Lindsay Lohan's latest starring role with the St. Patrick's Day special Irish Wish. Once summer arrived, things heated up with plenty of star-studded spectacles that viewers truly fell head over heels for.
And can you blame any of us when the movie are just so lovable? If you happened to miss any of Netflix's latest romantic comedies in 2024, we're diving into the year's must-watch movies you have to add to your watch list for movie night. But if you've already watched each of the movies, perhaps it's time for a rewatch. Check out Netflix's top rom-coms of the year so far!
Players
Gina Rodriguez leads an all-star cast in Players, which centers on a sportswriter in New York who suddenly ditches her usual plan of using "plays" to hook up with men when she falls for her most recent match. Tom Ellis, Damon Wayans Jr., Liza Koshy, Augustus Prew, Joel Courtney, and Ego Nwodim also star in the romantic comedy that was released on Valentine's Day. While Players received middling reception from critics, it's certainly enchanting enough thanks to its talented cast. Look at that lineup! For a lot of viewers, this one's a real homerun.
Irish Wish
We all have Netflix to thank for the Lindsay Lohan renaissance, which kicked off back in 2022 with the release of her holiday rom-com Falling for Christmas. The star will next appear in this year's holiday movie Our Little Secret, but earlier this year, she starred in the streamer's fantasy rom-com Irish Wish. In the movie, Lohan plays a book editor whose wish for true love suddenly turns her into the bride at her best friend's wedding the man of her dreams. Inevitably, she falls from cloud nine and learns a real lesson on true love. In spite of the movie's negative reviews, Lohan never disappoints!
Mother of the Bride
Netflix served up a Mother's Day weekend special with Mother of the Bride, a romantic comedy with a premise we have all seen before but was charming nonetheless. Brooke Shields stars as an overprotective single mother, who learns that her daughter Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) is marrying the son of the man who broke her heart back in college. Benjamin Bratt and Sean Teale also star as the leading men, while the stacked ensemble brings mega-laughs. Even if you can predict what's going to happen from the second the story sets up, it's still a rom-com ride worth taking.
A Family Affair
It's not every day that Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron star in a romantic comedy about an age gap, second chance romance, but Netflix set off the fireworks this summer with A Family Affair. Joey King also stars in the rom-com as the assistant to a major movie star whose mother falls for said major movie star. Naturally, it's a comedy of miscommunication, comical errors, and heightened emotions from all three personalities involved in the blossoming new relationship. The cast also includes Kathy Bates, Liza Koshy, and Sherry Cola in excellent supporting roles.
Find Me Falling
Harry Connick Jr.'s next in line as the latest Netflix original romantic comedy leading man, starring alongside Agni Scott in Find Me Falling. The rom-com premieres on July 19 and centers on a struggling musician who retreats to a slower island life in Cyprus, only to reunite with a former flame. Of all the Netflix romantic comedies released so far in 2024, Find Me Falling might be the least intriguing to fans, mostly because it's the least star-powered. But never underestimate the power of the handsome Harry Connick Jr.! Don't forget to check this one out before summer ends.
