On paper, nothing sounds better than spending some time in Nantucket for a late summer celebration hosted by Nicole Kidman. But in Netflix's upcoming mystery drama limited series The Perfect Couple, there's much more than meets the eye with this particular coastal occasion and the wealthy family at the center of it all.

After making a splash in the romantic comedy A Family Affair, Kidman returns to Netflix with her latest limited series, the sudsy six-episode treat The Perfect Couple based on the book of the same by Elin Hilderbrand. On July 11, Netflix announced that the series will be released on Thursday, Sept. 5, and the streaming service also unveiled the first two-minute teaser trailer.

The preview clip drops us right into the middle of the Winbury family's picturesque world in Nantucket with Kidman and Liev Schreiber's characters sharing the secrets to a lasting three-decade marriage. But the song "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" by Frankie Valli soon warns us: "You're just too good to be true." It's an ominous sheen of doubt that casts a shadow over the family's fatal wedding festivities.

The Perfect Couple release date, trailer, synopsis, and cast

On Sept. 5, we'll watch the whole sordid celebration unfold as a newcomer to the Winbury bunch, played by Eve Hewson, witnesses firsthand the secrets and lies that have built the brand of the family she's marrying into. Soon, one of Greer's (Kidman) novels seems to become reality when a dead body washes up on the shore and no one's safe from being a suspect in the slaying.

"Amelia Sacks is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury, has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season — until a body turns up on the beach. As secrets come to light, the stage is set for a real-life investigation that feels plucked from the pages of one of Greer’s novels. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect."

Apart from Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman and Emmy Award nominee Liev Schreiber leading the cast as the parents of the Winbury family and Eve Hewson as their new soon-to-be daughter-in-law, The Perfect Couple also stars Jack Reynor, Billy Howle, and Sam Nivola as their three sons. Dakota Fanning stars as their pregnant daughter-in-law, Meghann Fahy as the bride's sassy best friend, and Ishaan Khattar as the groom's closest friend.

The Perfect Couple was first announced to be moving ahead at Netflix in 2022 after the series had been in development at Fox in 2019. Jenna Lamia serves as the creator, showrunner, and writer of the series, while Susanne Bier (who worked with Kidman on The Undoing) directed and executive produced each episode. The series also counts Kidman and Shawn Levy as executive producers. Earlier this year, the series was confirmed for a release in late 2024.
