Based on the popular Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea, Ugly Betty premiered on ABC in 2006 and saw a mostly successful run until its untimely cancellation after four seasons. Every episode is now available to stream on Netflix as of Aug. 1, introducing new audiences to the quirky comedy.
The series follows main character Betty Suarez, a twentysomething living in Queens, New York, who begins working at a high-fashion magazine despite not appearing to have a sense of style. Betty’s life is turned upside down when she starts working for Mode in Manhattan, filling in as an assistant for the new Editor-in-Chief. As she navigates her new career, Betty forms connections with her co-workers and is also mocked by others for her physical appearance and awkwardness.
Unfortunately, Ugly Betty was moved to ABC’s Friday night slot towards the show’s end and the ratings weren’t great. Despite the less-than-stellar viewership, fans were heartbroken at the network’s decision to cancel the show.
If you’re looking for a lighthearted comedy with a fantastic lead, you should definitely start watching Ugly Betty tonight. Fingers crossed it sees a resurgence of popularity now that it’s on Netflix and maybe we’ll get an extra season or spinoff! — Natalie Zamora
