Sweet Tooth season 3 is coming to Netflix soon! Netflix already confirmed the third season of the Netflix original series has been filmed, so now, we’re just waiting to see when the new season will be released. Netflix has confirmed Sweet Tooth season 3 is coming in 2024.

Sweet Tooth is easily one of the best fantasy shows on Netflix. Two seasons of the show have already come out, and now there’s news that a third season will be coming soon. Unfortunately, we don’t have an official release date just yet, but we shared everything we know so far about the upcoming Sweet Tooth season 3.

The fantasy series premiered on Netflix in June 2021 and quickly gained a fanbase. Due to the first season’s success, Netflix went ahead and renewed the show for a second season a month later. However, fans had to wait for a very long time to see the second season with it not releasing until April 2023. But even though it took forever for the second season to come out, I think many fans would agree with me when I say it was worth the wait.

Now, Netflix has announced a third season, and we’re keeping track of every new piece of information released about it to share with you.

Sweet Tooth season 3 is happening

On May 3, almost a full week after the second season came out, Netflix announced to the world some very good news. The streaming giant announced that Sweet Tooth season 3 was officially happening. This came as a surprise because it’s not often that the streamer renews a show so early. Netflix typically waits to see how many people watch a new season of a show in a specific time frame before making a decision. Luckily, Sweet Tooth didn’t have to go through this.

Sweet Tooth season 3 is the final season

When Netflix announced Sweet Tooth‘s renewal, the streamer also revealed that the third season would be the last season of the fantasy series. Although we’re saddened by this news, we’re just glad we’ll get to see Gus, Jepperd, and all the other characters’ stories wrap up.

Has Netflix announced the Sweet Tooth season 3 release date?

Unfortunately, Netflix has not announced the Sweet Tooth season 3 release date yet. We’re optimistic that we won’t have to wait too long for Sweet Tooth season 3, but there’s no chance Sweet Tooth season 3 is coming to Netflix in 2023. Netflix already confirmed Sweet Tooth season 3 is coming in 2024.

Although production has already started and ended on Sweet Tooth season 3, Netflix likely won’t release Sweet Tooth season 3 soon. Usually, we see Netflix space out seasons of big shows like this one. Vikings: Valhalla is another show that films seasons back to back, but then, Netflix holds the new seasons for about a year after the previous season premieres. We could see Netflix do that with Sweet Tooth season 3.

The second season was released during the spring of 2023. At the earliest, we can expect to see Sweet Tooth season 3 on Netflix in early 2024.

We’ve also seen Netflix executives allude to the amount of content the streamer has to get through the WGA strike. We know there are a number of Netflix projects in post-production right now. If the WGA strike continues and the SAG strike happens, we could see Netflix stash some of these projects that are finished to continue to release content while other networks and streamers have stopped.

For now, we’re expecting to see Sweet Tooth season 3 on Netflix in early 2024. We’ll share more updates when we find out more information about the new season.

Release Prediction: Early 2024

Is Sweet Tooth season 3 filming?

Nope! Netflix revealed that Sweet Tooth season 3 has already been filmed. The streamer didn’t say when the third season was filmed, but our guess is that it was shot back to back with the second season. Like the first two seasons, the third season was shot in New Zealand.

Sweet Tooth season 3 cast

Spoilers ahead from Sweet Tooth season 2.

The complete cast list hasn’t been revealed yet, but we shared who’s expected to return and who’s confirmed. Christian Convery (Gus), Nonso Anozie (Jepperd), Adeel Akhtar (Dr. Aditya Singh), Stefania LaVie Owen (Bear), Aliza Vellani (Rani Singh), and Naledi Murray (Wendy) are all expected to return. James Brolin is also expected to reprise his role as the narrator. We might see the return of some of the other hybrid kids as well. Since Dania Ramirez’s character (Aimee) dies in season 2, she most likely won’t return. But if she does, it’ll probably be in flashbacks.

Netflix confirmed that Rosalind Chao will return as Mrs. Zhang, and Amy Seimetz as Birdie in the upcoming third season. They have been bumped up to series regulars. Additionally, two new actors have joined the season 3 cast as series regulars: Cara Gee and Ayazhan Dalabayeva. Gee plays a character named Siana, and Dalabayeva portrays a character named Nuka.

Here’s the cast list below:

  • Christian Convery as Gus
  • Nonso Anozie as Tommy Jepperd
  • Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Aditya Singh
  • Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear
  • Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh
  • Naledi Murray as Wendy
  • James Brolin as narrator
  • Rosalind Chao as Zhang
  • Amy Seimetz as Birdie
  • Cara Gee as Siana
  • Ayazhan Dalabayeva as Nuka

Sweet Tooth season 2 ending

The second season ends with Gus and Co (Jepperd, Bear, Wendy) defeating General Abbot and the Last Men and then heading to Alaska to find Birdie. Dr. Adi makes his way to Yellowstone and finds Gus’s cabin. He walks into the empty cabin and finds a map of Alaska. Could this mean he’s headed to the icy state as well? Meanwhile, Rani is traveling alone across the country. The last scene of the season shows Ms. Zhang feeding mysterious vicious creatures and saying that she’ll have to take care of something herself. She has Dr. Adi’s research, so maybe she’s saying she’ll come up with the cure herself. I guess we’ll find out in Sweet Tooth season 3.

Why did Sweet Tooth season 2 take so long?

Sweet Tooth season 1 premiered on Netflix in June 2021, but then, we had to wait about two years until Sweet Tooth season 2 was released in April 2023. Production on Sweet Tooth season 2 started in the beginning of 2022 and then wrapped sometime in the summer of 2022.

There are a few reasons that there was such a big delay. Almost every show and movie was impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions, and it caused a little bit of a pile up as cast, crew, and creative teams had to stop working for so long and then rejoin the sprint when things started to get back to firing on all cylinders.

Sweet Tooth, though, was renewed for two seasons even though fans didn’t know it! Netflix announced Sweet Tooth season 2 at the end of July 2021. The writers then went back to work nd wrote two full seasons of the show, while production got rolling in the early part of 2022.

The, the cast and crew had to film two full seasons, which was done by the summer of 2022. Normally, we’d see the new season of a series like this one about six to eight months after production ends with all the post-production that goes into a show like Sweet Tooth, so fans had to wait a little bit longer than expected. But, that was more due to Netflix taking its time, not rushing out the season, and strategically spacing out its lineup of original shows.

That’s likely what will happen with season 3, as well, but the good news is that the season has already been filmed.

What is Sweet Tooth season 3 about?

Sweet Tooth season 3 will pick up where the story left off in season 2. Gus, Jepperd, Wendy, and Bear are headed to Alaska.

Here’s what executive producer Jim Mickle said about the third season’s plot:

"“It’s another road trip story like Season 1, but in a very different way. Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2. In Season 3, everybody is dealing with some kind of wound or emotional loss, whether that was somebody in their life or a part of themselves. Everybody is looking inward and looking to move on and ultimately learning that life doesn’t stop. You have to keep putting one foot in front of another.”"

This is what Sweet Tooth executive producers Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell had to say about the third season.

"“The ticking clock of, ‘Can they achieve their goal before it’s too late?’ is ratcheted up.” Burrell adds, “It just keeps amping up. It feels like a culmination emotionally and you get to see all of these characters together and their philosophies really at odds. Tension is high.”"

Sweet Tooth season 3 episode count

It sounds like Sweet Tooth season 3 will be eight episodes like the first two seasons of the series. When the series ends, there will have been 24 episodes of the series.

Will Sweet Tooth season 3 be darker than previous seasons?

Yes. According to Sweet Tooth star Christian Convery, Sweet Tooth season 3 will see a tonal shift.

Here’s what Convery said about the third season:

"“Season 3 is darker than Season 2. Gus is growing alongside the series, starting to mature as the themes get darker. There’s a lot he has to deal with, and it’s peak Sweet Tooth intensity.”"

Although the third season will be darker, it’s unknown if the age rating will change. For the past two seasons, the age rating for the show has been TV-14. Don’t worry. We’ll let you know if it changes.

Where to watch Sweet Tooth season 3

Sweet Tooth season 3 will stream exclusively on Netflix around the world sometime in 2024. As mentioned, we still don’t know the premiere date yet.

The first two seasons are streaming on Netflix right now, and that’s the only place you can watch both seasons of the Netflix original series.

Is Sweet Tooth based on the COVID-19 pandemic?

The timing is almost too good, but no, Sweet Tooth is not based on the COVID-19 pandemic. There are many scenes with masks, so it makes sense that Sweet Tooth fans would assume it was inspired by the pandemic, but the series is based on a comic book that’s more than a decade old now.
