Outer Banks season 4 confirmed (but will it be the final season?)

Outer Banks fans have a lot to celebrate this year. Not only is the beloved Netflix original drama returning for its third season on Feb. 23, but Netlfix has announced that Outer Banks season 4 is officially in the works!

Although Netlfix is not one to hand out early renewals, the streaming service handed out a surprise renewal to Outer Banks days before the show’s return in a truly epic fashion!

During the POGUELANDIA fan event in Huntington Beach, CA, cast members Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Carlacia Grant, Rudy Pankow, Austin North, and Drew Starkey surprised the fans in attendance by announcing a Season 4 renewal on stage as the event neared its conclusion.

"“Seeing Poguelandia come to life was nothing short of spectacular. The Pogues are enjoying an adventure of a lifetime, and we now get to map out more twists and turns as the joyride continues into season four of Outer Banks,” co-creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke, who are set to return for Season 4, commented in a joint statement reacting to the news. “Thank you to Netflix, our cast, and the amazing fans who helped to make this happen.”"

Is Outer Banks season 4 the last season of OBX?

With the early renewal of Outer Banks, fans are understandably eager to know what exactly Netflix might have in mind and whether the season could end up being the show’s last. And it’s an understandable concern to have given how many Netflix shows have ended around their fourth season. While it’s possible Netflix could choose to end the show with its fourth season, all signs are pointing towards the show continuing beyond its fourth season.

When announcing Outer Banks‘ renewal at the Poguelandia event on Feb. 18, 2023, Netflix did not promote the announcement as a final season renewal. This would seem to indicate the streaming service is not currently planning on wrapping the show’s run in season 4.

Typically, when Netlfix has renewed a show for a final season, it will be clear in promoting the renewal as a final season renewal from the beginning. Take for example how it handled the renewal of Stranger Things. When announcing the show’s renewal, Netflix immediately billed season 5 as the final season of Stranger Things with the creative team behind the show addressing their desire to end the show with a final season the day the renewal was announced.

With Outer Banks, there has been no mention of season 4 being the end of the road for the Pogues. Instead, the creative team seems to be prepared to map out new stories that would go beyond season 4 and allow the season to continue going for at least a few more seasons. In other words, we shouldn’t have to worry about saying goodbye to our favorite Pogues anytime soon!
