Dead to Me, a Netflix original series created by Liz Feldman, has been capturing the hearts of its audience since its premiere in 2019.
The comedy-drama centered on Jen Harding (Christina Applegate), a widow in search of the hit-and-run driver who took her husband’s life, delves into topics of grief and loss while also embracing what makes life an exceptional experience like an unexpected friendship.
Judy Hale, an optimist played by Applegate’s co-lead Linda Cardellini, is the complete opposite of Jen. She’s the free-spirited counterpart to Jen’s wound-tight personality. Judy, however, isn’t all that she seems, which becomes more and more apparent as the episodes go on.
Their bond, as well as Dead to Me‘s twists and turns, is what has made the series such a success. It’s also what garnered the show a renewal in 2020 for its third season. Here’s what we know about Dead to Me season 3.
How many seasons of Dead to Me are there?
There are two seasons of Dead to Me available to stream now on Netflix.
Is there going to be a season 3 of Dead to Me?
Dead to Me was renewed for a season 3. However, it will be the final season of the series.
Feldman told Deadline that the conclusion of Jen and Judy’s story came to her during production of the show’s second season. She stated:
"I always knew from the inception of the show that I didn’t want it to be a long long-running show. Then there was a certain point when we were in production on Season 2 when the end of the show came to me, pretty profoundly, so I realized, ‘I know the story that I have to tell’ and Season 3 feels like the right time to do that. It’s just something that came to me organically, and I tend to try to follow the gut feelings I have."
Clearly, fans don’t have to worry about a pasted-together series end prompted by a renewal simply meant to tie up loose ends.
Feldman cited Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s decision to end her runaway hit Fleabag after two seasons as a move that left an impression on her.
Referred to in the article as “self-editing skills,” creators determining the end of a series before it jumps the shark is something we hope becomes a regular occurrence.
How many episodes of Dead to Me season 3 are there?
The first two seasons of Dead to Me consist of 10 episodes each. Each episode was about 30 minutes long. Season 3 of the series will likely follow in the same vein.
When is Dead to Me season 3 filming?
According to What’s on Netflix, Dead to Me season 3 was scheduled to start filming on Jan. 11, 2021, and run through April 6, 2021. Production was ultimately delayed due to the pandemic and began in May 2021 with an expected wrap date in August 2021.
However, filming on season 3 paused in light of Christina Applegate’s MS diagnosis to allow her time to privately navigate and prioritize her health. After the temporary pause in August 2021, there wasn’t word when production would resume.
Thankfully, production resumed by the end of 2021 before wrapping for the year amid a slew of positive covid test among the crew. Dead to Me returned for the final sprint of filming at the top of 2022 and marked a series wrap by the end of February.
Dead to Me season 3 release updates
Dead to Me season 3 could be released sometime in summer 2022 based on its wrap date. We can say that the show has missed its usual premiere date window of the first week in May in 2021, and it’s likely that the final season could miss that window again in 2022.
Since most of the season had been filmed by the end of 2021, it’s possible that the series has gotten a jump on the post-production process that can take between four to six (or even eight!) months depending on the show.
Right now, we’re estimating Dead to Me season 3 to arrive sometime between June and August 2022, though that broad release window could certainly shift in either direction. Now that filming has wrapped, it’s only a matter of time until an official announcement!
We’ll keep you posted on more Dead to Me season 3 release date news.
