The Midnight Club: Crystal Balint teases other Christopher Pike books are incorporated

Mike Flanagan’s latest work for Netflix, Midnight Mass, debuted on the streamer in September and was quite a pleasant surprise for viewers. Although the filmmaker made a name for himself with his shows The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass truly is miles ahead in the emotional depth, storytelling, and performances.

Of course, this only has Flanagan’s fans more excited for his next project for Netflix, The Midnight Club. This will be an adaptation of the YA book of the same name by Christopher Pike. Although it hasn’t been confirmed what the show’s rating will be, the source material is certainly a tad different than what he’s worked with before.

Actors from Flanagan’s previous projects will be returning for The Midnight Club, including Samantha Sloyan (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, Hush), Zach Gilford (Midnight Mass), Crystal Balint (Midnight Mass), and others. Horror icon Heather Langenkamp, best known for her role as Nancy in the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies, will also be part of the cast.

FanSided’s horror podcast One Good Scare recently spoke with Crystal Balint about her experience working on Midnight Mass, in which she played the role of Dolly Scarborough. Balint also spoke briefly about The Midnight Club, confirming there’s more than meets the eye with this project.

What is The Midnight Club based on?

We know Mike Flanagan‘s upcoming Netflix show is based on the book The Midnight Club by Christopher Pike, but it looks like other works from Pike will be included as well.

Noting The Midnight Club is something “different” from what Flanagan has done before, Balint also suggested as a “hint” to read more than one Christopher Pike book before the show comes out. Of course, she could not reveal which books to read, but she made it clear others will come in handy.

The idea that The Midnight Club might include other books has been reported before, with Variety sharing in May 2020: “Sources say that the series would also incorporate other Pike works.” Looks like we’ve got confirmation from one of the stars herself that the sources are correct!

Pike has written many YA books, so we’ve got a ton to choose from in preparation for The Midnight Club. Some of his most popular include Fall Into Darkness, Spellbound, and Scavenger Hunt. He’s also written multiple series and anthologies, such as the Cheerleader series and the Remember Me series.
