Is The Midnight Club related to Midnight Mass?
By Sabrina Reed
Mike Flanagan’s newest horror, Midnight Mass, premiered its seven episode season on Friday, Sept. 24. The limited series doesn’t tie into the showrunner’s The Haunting anthology series that’s known for its attention to ghost stories. However, it does take viewers into a supernatural narrative, one that’s Biblical in nature.
Flanagan’s work in the horror genre has garnered quite the attention, especially on Netflix as his series have become the kind that sends the internet abuzz. While season 3 for The Haunting isn’t currently in the cards at the streamer, Midnight Mass isn’t the last project subscribers will see of Flanagan’s on the platform. He has an upcoming series that’s set to make its land in 2022, and it’s called The Midnight Club.
While Midnight Mass focuses on a small, isolated island where a community has welcomed a new faith leader, The Midnight Club has an entirely different story at the center of its plot. The two disparate series do have something in common though and it has to do with the cast.
Here’s what we know about The Midnight Club!
The Midnight Club’s connection to Midnight Mass
The Midnight Club is based on a young adult novel written by Christopher Pike. Flanagan said in a tweet: “I’ve been dreaming of this project since I was a teenager…”
So, it’s clearly going to be a project that’s close to his heart. Given the premise of the story, it’s likely to be a show that resonates with many viewers as it centers on a group of close friends. The teens in this series, however, are all terminally ill, horror loving storytellers who meet-up in their hospice library at night to exchange scary stories.
Together they make a pact. Whoever among them dies first must come back to see them all from the afterlife. It’s difficult subject matter to be sure as were the religious and faith-based questions examined in Midnight Mass. But The Midnight Club is an opportunity for another powerful story that examines relationships, belief systems, and our ties to each other and the universe to find its place on Netflix.
While The Midnight Club won’t share a universe with Midnight Mass, both shows will share cast members as Flanagan is prone to casting actors he’s worked with on previous projects. Zach Gilford, Annarah Cymone, Igby Rigney, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, and Crystal Balint are in the cast. Cymone and Rigney are set to play members of the midnight club the show is centered on.
Currently, the series is in post-production. We’ll keep you posted on The Midnight Club release date news as it comes in. Stay tuned to Netflix Life!
