Outer Banks season 2 is all about the high stakes and treasure hunting. But, just like the first season, there’s ample room for romance. Relationship drama is the bread and butter of most television especially teen shows, and Outer Banks is no exception.

Kiara, also known as Kie, has the unfortunate position of being the only girl in her group of Pogues. Of course, this means the series does a bit of a round robin with her romantic choices. In season 1, the writers teased a connection between her and John B.

They had a vibe, and he wasn’t the only one with feelings. Clearly, Kie liked him, too, but she sidestepped whatever they might be to hang firmly in their friendship. John B. got with Sarah, forming a fan favorite romance, and Kie eventually got paired with Pope.

However, season 1 left Kie and Pope in limbo, leaning toward figuring out their feelings for one another, but limbo nonetheless. Initially, Kie had rejected Pope’s advances. She didn’t return his love for her. For an unexplained reason, she later kisses him, putting the two on the path to a relationship in season 2.

But, the pairing wasn’t the ship that took off like a rocket for Kie in the Outer Banks fandom. Her connection with JJ did which left fans wondering if the two would ever get together.

Do JJ and Kie become a couple in Outer Banks season 2?

The attention surrounding JJ and Kie as a possible item on the show was so impactful that creator and showrunner Jonas Pate spoke about the ship in an Entertainment Weekly interview after season 1 had dropped.

Pate had been asked about the Pogue love triangle between John B., Kiara, and Pope, but his answer focused on her relationship with JJ and fan reaction to it.

"It’s been really interesting to watch the reaction to the show and to see how many people actually wanted Kiara and J.J. to be together. That was interesting to us, and so we’re thinking about that, but we don’t want to leave the Pope-Kiara story line short either. So we’re playing with a lot of different ideas of exactly how we’re going to platform Kiara’s love life into season 2."

The response to JJ and Kie as a romance clearly had an affect on season 2. Her back-and-forth tumultuous relationship with Pope is one of the least interesting pieces of the second season. The two basically tread water with Kie running hot and cold until she finally settles on the fact that she doesn’t love Pope the way he wants her to love him.

Kie landing on this revelation–the one she’d already reached when Pope first told her how he felt–didn’t open the flood gates for her and JJ. Sorry, shippers. However, the two did make plans to go on a surfing trip together once they got their cut of whatever treasure they can get their hands on.

Yes, that means JJ and Kie are factoring one another into their future plans. Also, we didn’t miss JJ clocking Kie’s hand on his shoulder after he came to when the Pogues saved him from drowning. Kie was the one who held onto him in the water, and she was by his side when they were saved.

No feelings were declared. The two didn’t have a romantic moment but the subtext was obvious. There may be something there between the pair.

If Outer Banks gets a third season, they could explore Kie and JJ’s relationship. It’s ripe for the picking though the show will have to take a hit for the lone girl in the OG Pogue group being a love interest for all three of her boys.
