The TV landscape has been all over the place due to the coronavirus pandemic which has stranded many a television viewer in a hellish hiatus period for some of their favorite shows. That’s been the case for Riverdale fans on Netflix who are in for at least a five-month wait until season 5 drops on the platform. As well as those of us holding out for Stranger Things season 4 which isn’t coming in June and is likely to miss the 2020-2021 television year entirely.

We were last with our band of misfit kids and their bumbling adults in July 2019. While the Stranger Things audience has had to wait almost two years between seasons before this particular wait has felt excruciating. Mainly because we’re about to trip past two years and be closer to three by the time season 4 premieres.

The cast and crew of the series have been dropping nuggets of information about the upcoming season, so it’s not like we’re not being fed. However, considering the circumstances of where we left off in season 3, this delay has personally raised my expectations.

El is powerless and living with the Byers. Hopper, who everyone thinks is dead, is imprisoned in a Russian work camp. The Russian military has somehow gotten their hands on their own demogorgon which implies a breach in the fabric of this dimension into the Upside Down.

There’s so much story to mine, but we’re still in for a wait until we see the continuation of Stranger Things.

Stranger Things season 4 release date

Filming has yet to wrap for Stranger Things, and it’s reported production won’t finish until August 2021. There have been rumors that season 4 and season 5 are being filmed back to back, which would explain the long production time for the series this go around.

However, what’s fact is that if filming isn’t set to conclude until the end of the summer then Stranger Things season 4 will miss a turnaround window that would keep it as a 2021 release.

A 6-8 month post-production period isn’t out of the question for this sci-fi horror series that’s special effects-heavy. As such, fans shouldn’t expect to see season 4 until 2022.

Even taking into consideration the teasers that have been released–“From Russia with love…” and “Eleven, are you listening?”–there’s still the theory that we have two more teasers before we’ll see an official trailer for the season.

It’s likely we’ll be in for a long promotional haul as Stranger Things is a juggernaut of a series that’s become such a big part of Netflix’s brand. They’re clearly not interested in rushing to release season 4 at the tail end of 2021, especially when The Witcher season 2 has been confirmed for an end of the year drop.

Netflix isn’t going to have two big franchises releasing new seasons at the same time on the platform. Stranger Things season 4 could be the big draw for the streamer in the early months of 2022 after The Witcher has been given enough time to breathe with audiences and the news cycle. But it’s also possible they’d wait to release Stranger Things until spring or early summer.

We really won’t have a better estimate of just how long we’ll be waiting for season 4 until filming wraps. If you’re missing some of our misfit band both Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke are set to star in the Fear Street trilogy, a film series based on the books by R.L. Stine.

The movies take place in the ’90s, ’70s, and 1660s and are centered on the horrific, life-threatening events happening in the small town of Shadyside. Part One: 1994 premieres Friday, July 2.

We’ll keep you posted on more Stranger Things season 4 release date news as it comes in.
