Will Stranger Things season 4 and season 5 be filmed back to back?

Stranger Things season 4 is currently in production in Georgia in early 2021. We’re still waiting to find out how long production on Stranger Things season 4 will last.

There are some interesting rumors floating around online about Stranger Things season 4 and Stranger Things season 5 being filmed back to back. It’s important to note that we don’t know where the rumors are coming from. They have not been confirmed by Netflix.

We already know Stranger Things season 5 is, more or less, happening after the Duffer Brothers confirmed that season 4 would not be the final season. We know that Netflix won’t cancel the series, so that means Stranger Things season 5 is happening. Yay!

Now, let’s talk about that Stranger Things season 4 rumor about filming both seasons back to back.

How long does is take to film a Stranger Things season?

This is a good place to start. We have a pretty clear track record of how long production takes for Stranger Things seasons. For the first season, production started in November 2015 and a few months later in early 2016.

According to Collider, production on season 2 and season 3 each took about seven months. So, the first season was a bit shorter than the other two seasons, and that makes sense because there were so many more visual effects used for season 2 and season 3 than the first season.

So, let’s just say that Stranger Things season 4 is expected to take about seven months.

Why does that matter? Well, we’ll get to it!

How long is Stranger Things season 4 filming?

Production on Stranger Things season 4 started in Lithuania in early 2020. Production moved back to Georgia in early 2020 before it was shut down in March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. It sounds like they had been filming for a few weeks. Maybe, if we’re lucky, they finished an episode, but that’s doubtful.

Then, there was a huge delay in production. Stranger Things season 4 started filming again sometime in November 2020. Then, there was another gap sometime in December, and then production started back up again in mid to late January 2021.

So, at best, we’re two or three months into production on Stranger Things season 4. Gaten Matarazzo recently said that filming was going more slowly than usual, so that’s another not-so-good sign.

At best, Stranger Things season 4 has at least a few months of production left. And, in that time, we’re expecting they’ll need to move to New Mexico at some point to film. It was expected that production would move sometime in December 2020, but it doesn’t appear that happened.

Recently, Sherman Augustus, a new cast member for season 4, commented in an Instagram post that filming could take until August 2021. We assume he was talking about season 4 filming.

Will Stranger Things season 5 filming start soon?

It appears some fans of the series are anticipating Stranger Things saying in production until, like, August could mean that they are filming both seasons back to back.

While it’s possible, it’s more likely that Stranger Things season 4 would take that long to film. As we noted, most seasons take about seven months, and season 4 is taking longer than usual, as we heard.

It’d be really difficult for the cast and crew to pack two full seasons into that short of a production window. If they were filming season 4 and season 5 back to back, it’d take much longer, I think, to do, especially during a pandemic.

So, as things stand, I’d say that it doesn’t appear Stranger Things season 4 and season 5 will be filmed back to back. That’s just speculation, though. It could still happen, though.

It’s totally possible that Stranger Things season 5 could start filming in August, as well, assuming that Augustus’ production timeline is correct. That’d be a lot to put on these young performers, though, and that’s why I doubt it would happen.

It wouldn’t be the first time Netflix filmed things together. We saw it happen recently for To All The Boys 2 and 3 and The Kissing Booth 2 and 3.

If Stranger Things season 4 really takes until August 2021, that’s not good for those hoping for a 2021 release date on Netflix. That’s all we can really say about that now.
