Mindhunter season 3 might still happen, according to new rumors

A new report is claiming Mindhunter season 3 is back on the table—but how plausible is the return of the Netflix hit?

UK website Small Screen cites an unidentified source as saying that Netflix has renewed talks with Mindhunter auteur David Fincher for a new season of the serial killer drama, after putting it on “indefinite hold” over a year ago.

The site’s source claims “Conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season.

“It’s still very early days,” they add, “but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project.”

Netflix has made no official comment, leaving fans to guess how serious these Mindhunter season 3 rumors really are.

On one hand, they make a certain amount of sense, because David Fincher spoke at length around the original psuedo-cancellation about how draining the show was on him and how he wanted to do other things, and it’s well known that Fincher is the driving force behind the series. So the only way that a new Mindhunter season would plausibly happen is if Fincher was ready to revisit Holden Ford, Bill Tench, Wendy Carr and the BSU.

However, anything from an unnamed source always has to be taken with a grain of salt, and there are plenty of logistical hurdles before season 3 could be seriously considered.

Even if you assume the Small Screen report is correct, these discussions are early, which means that they could end up going nowhere. Talks happen all the time without necessarily leading to any content being made; one such example is Dick Wolf and NBC talking about the Law & Order: Hate Crimes spinoff, which has been in development since 2018 yet never actually turned up. The last report in 2019 had NBC execs saying it “will happen one day” which sounds an awful lot like the limbo Mindhunter fans have been in.

The other issue is that none of the cast are under contract anymore. When Netflix made the “indefinite hold” announcement, it also released them from their contracts so they could find other jobs. The network and studio would have to get Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv back on board to make Mindhunter season 3.

While the stars have been open about how much they enjoyed doing the show, wanting to do a new season doesn’t mean they actually could. It depends on if they’d be available when Netflix is ready to shoot a third season, or if they’ll be contractually tied to other projects. Stars have had to turn down roles all the time because of scheduling conflicts.

So if we’re looking at this like a case, there really isn’t too much to get excited about just yet. While the idea of David Fincher and Netflix talking about more Mindhunter is encouraging, one vague report does not a new season make—especially when there are a lot of steps between now and getting season 3 made. We’ll keep an eye on this and see if these rumors grow into anything more concrete.
