Meet the talented cast of Netflix’s binge-worthy new show A Nearly Normal Family
By Mads Lennon
A Nearly Normal Family is Netflix’s latest captivating drama series, a dark character-driven miniseries about a young woman accused of murder and the lengths her parents will go to prove her innocence. The series is based on the book of the same name by Swedish writer Mattias Edvarsson.
The series centers on the Sandell family, consisting of teenage Stella and her parents, Ulrika and Adam. They seem to live a picture-perfect life in the quiet Swedish suburb of Lund, but when Stella meets an older man who takes an interest in her, things quickly spiral downhill for the entire family.
Alexandra Karlsson Tyrefors as Stella Sandell
Alexandra Tyrefors is a young, up-and-coming Swedish actress. A Nearly Normal Family marks her first professional acting job (at least, from what I could find on her IMDb page). She delivers an excellent, understated performance here as a teenage girl who becomes a victim of sexual assault, and later, mixed up in a murder investigation.
Stella is the daughter of Adam and Ulrika Sandell and she’s close friends with Amina Besic. Taking place four years after she’s raped by her much older assistant coach, Stella meets a charming guy named Christoffer “Chris” Olsen, who seems perfect at first before slowly revealing a more sinister side.

Lo Kauppi as Ulrika Sandell
Ulrika Sandell is a lawyer and the wife of Adam Sandell and mother of Stella Sandell. Throughout the six-episode series, Ulrika and Adam struggle with their crumbling marriage amid her affair with a colleague. When Stella is accused of murder, Ulrika takes it upon herself to do some investigating and try to prove her daughter’s innocence by any means possible.
Actress Lo Kauppi is a talented actress on both the stage and screen. She’s also a director and a television presenter. Kauppi’s credits include the 2015 crime drama film Drifters, the 2016 drama 6A, and the 2007 drama The New Man.

Björn Bengtsson as Adam Sandell
Swedish actor Björn Bengtsson plays Adam Sandell, Ulrika’s husband and Stella’s father. Adam is a priest in the Church of Sweden who strongly values his relationship with Stella, but has been struggling to connect with her ever since her assault.
Bengtsson is no stranger to Netflix, as he previously starred in the popular historical series The Last Kingdom, where he played the Norse earl Siegfried Thurgilson. Some of his other notable credits include the drama series Tjockare än vatten and the comedy film Bröderna Karlsson. He also studied at the Gothenburg Theatre Academy and has worked for several theaters over the years.
