Netflix’s beautiful and thought-provoking romantic drama Malcolm and Marie has been a top ten favorite with subscribers.

Some people are understandably curious as to whether or not the film will be able to take home the most coveted accolade in all of cinema, the almighty Oscar.

Malcolm and Marie is an exceptional endeavor to experience from start to finish, highlighted by fantastic performances from its leading duo, spectacular cinematography from Marcell Rév, and superb screenplay from Euphoria creator and director Sam Levinson.

The well-crafted story brilliantly showcases a couple’s interactions after a successful movie premiere that puts their relationship to the test, with both parties bearing their souls over the course of the evening.

Will Malcolm & Marie win Oscar for Netflix?

Netflix has several titles in the race this year looking for Oscar glory, including Pieces of a Woman, Da 5 Bloods, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Hillbilly Elegy, and Mank. While those are all excellent movies, Malcolm & Marie should be revered as a top-tier contender this season.

Fans of the Netflix original film were most assuredly concerned when they learned that Malcolm & Marie was completely snubbed by the Golden Globes not receiving a single nomination. But there is an ample amount of evidence that heavily suggests the Globes don’t always indicate how the Oscars will turn out.

The movie Milk won an Oscar for Best Screenplay with six other nods to boot after only receiving one Golden Globe nomination for its star Sean Penn. What some would argue as the most unpopular Bets Picture recipient, Crash won three Acadamy awards after not winning any of its Globe nominations.

So despite getting zero love from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Malcolm & Marie still has a solid shot of taking home the glorious gold statue on the big night. The question that remains is which one could it bring home for the streaming network?

It won’t be receiving any nominations for the Best Supporting Actor or Actress awards as there none in this motion picture. And it’s safe to presume Malcolm & Marie will not be competing for such categories as Costume Design, Makeup, VFX, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Best Score, and Best Song as well as Best Adapted Screenplay as it doesn’t qualify.

In order to get a better idea of what categories Malcolm and Marie’s has a significant chance to get nominated or even win, here is a small breakdown utilizing the odd provided by Gold Derby.

Best Production Design – 100/1

This award is notoriously known for going to period pieces over things happening in the modern-day, and even though Michael Grasley did an impressive job in Malcolm and Marie, it seems very unlikely the film gets recognized for this honor. Look for Netflix’s Mank and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom as well as Tom Hanks’ News of the World to be the frontrunners here.

Chances of nomination: Low
Chances of win: Low

Best Film Editing – 100/1

Julio Perez IV did a great job on the film’s final cut, and his work really enhances the enthralling narrative. While Malcolm and Marie may land a nod, it’s unlikely it will beat the likes of Nomadlad, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Mank, among several others in the running.

Chances of nomination: Low
Chances of win: Low

Best Cinematography – 75/1

There is no denying that Malcolm and Marie is a visually stunning endeavor when it comes to cinematography, and Marcell Rév’s chances of receiving a nomination are pretty good. He may lose to the likes Erik Messerschmidt on Mank or Hoyte van Hoytema from Tenet, but he absolutely deserves the nod for his efforts.

Chances of nomination: Moderately High

Chances of win: Low

Best Original Screenplay – 100/1

The screenplay is one of the best parts of the film, and the dialogue is masterfully structured. Unfortunately, odds are low based on the competition that Sam Levinson takes home a nomination, let alone a win for Malcolm and Marie.

Chances of nomination: Low
Chances of win: Low

Best Actor – 100/1

John David Washington does a remarkable job in his Malcolm and Marie role, but it’s not his year. It would seem more likely he’d get a nod for Tenet than this, and other big names like Chadwick Boseman, Riz Ahmed, and Steven Yeun seem to be the frontrunners.

Chances of nomination: Low
Chances of win: Low

Best Actress – 25/1

Zendaya gives a career-defining performance in Malcolm and Marie, and a nomination is almost guaranteed. If she got snubbed, it would be a travesty of epic proportions, and it seems unlikely that will occur. Winning will be a bit difficult, however, as the competition is stacked this year. She’ll be going up against the likes of Frances McDormand, Vanessa Kirby, Viola Davis, and number one contender Carey mulligan for Promising Young Woman.

Chances of nomination: Almost certain
Chances of win: Considerably high

Best Director – 100/1

It’s doubtful Sam Levinson gets nominated, but stranger things have happened. Chloe Zhao, David Fincher, Aaron Sorkin, and Regina King are the ones to watch on Oscar night.

Chances of nomination: Low
Chances of win: Low

Best Picture – 100/1

Chances seem low it could get in on the conversation for the night’s biggest honor, but stranger things have happened in this category, and it’s sot crazy to think this monochromatic masterpiece could be the big upset of the year and take home the award for Best Picture. Keep Malcolm and Marie as the sleeper pick at the Oscars in 2021.

Chances of nomination: Moderate
Chances of win: Sleeper
