10. What a Girl Wants

I was obsessed with this movie when I was a teenager. The romance, the clothes, the dance sequence, what’s not to like? It also doesn’t hurt that it stars Amanda Bynes and Colin Firth as father and daughter.

Besides them, the cast also includes Eileen Atkins, Jonathan Pryce, Kelly Preston, Oliver James, Christina Cole, and Anna Chancellor. The cast could not be better.

The story follows 17-year-old Daphne Reynolds. She lives with her wedding singer mother in New York City. Her mother had always been honest with her about her father, but Daphne has never felt whole not having met him. So she takes off to London to find him.

After finding a room at a hostel, she sneaks into an event where her father, Henry, catches her. He is shocked he has a daughter as Daphne’s mother never told him. Henry is too in shock to do anything so his mother becomes the welcoming party and gives her a room at the estate. Henry is insanely rich so it’s a VERY nice room.

Once Henry confirms that Daphne is his daughter, he tries to connect with her. Daphne, on the other hand, tries to fit into his social circle which does not go well. Henry’s fiance, Glynnis, and her snobby daughter, Clarissa, mess with her plans at every turn.

Daphne also has to fend off an upper-class boy who Clarissa happens to like. Daphne finds him gross and eventually pushes him into a river. #goals

While Daphne starts to win over Henry’s social circle, her behavior seems to be losing him support to become the next Prime Minister. While Henry was starting to loosen up, all that stops when he finds out this news. Daphne also shuts down and lets Henry’s advisors make her into what they think she should be.

Luckily, Henry’s advisors and his fiance underestimate Daphne and her father. Despite just meeting, they’re truly committed to each other and support one another. This is especially the case when they both find out a secret that was hidden since Daphne was first conceived.

The story also features a romance between Daphne and a local boy in London, Ian. She meets him when she first arrives and they continue to date while she’s in London until she stands him up when she’s trying to be a “proper” daughter. Luckily, they end up getting back together when Daphne becomes herself again.

This is such a cute movie which makes it perfect for a relaxing Valentine’s Day. If you have yet to see it, now’s the time to watch it on Netflix!
