9. About Time

Looking for a time travel romance movie? About Time is definitely one you’ll want to check out. It stars Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, Billy Nighy, Margot Robbie, Tom Hollander, Vanessa Kirby, and Lydia Wilson.

The movie follows Tim Lake who, at the age of 21, finds out that the men in his family can travel through time. To do so, they must be in a dark space, clench their fists, and visualize a memory (that’s it?). Tim decides to use his power to improve his love life.

After a few mistakes, he meets Mary in a restaurant and they hit it off but when he gets back from spending time with her, he finds that his friend had a terrible night at the play he was in. Trying to make his friend feel better, Tim goes back in time and makes the show a success, but when he goes to call Mary, he realizes in the new time table, he never met her.

Determined to find her again, he goes to a Kate Moss exhibition he knows she’ll be at, but she now has a boyfriend. Once again, Tim goes back in time to the moment when her and her boyfriend first met and he meets and leaves with her before the boyfriend can show up. Everything seems to work out great. He moves in with Mary and they have a daughter together

But other parts of Tim’s family life start to crash and burn and when he comes back, things are very different. Tim has to finally accept that changing things in the past is not the way to change things in the present even if it means losing people entirely.

While About Time is about a love story, it’s also about love between family and friends and how much we have to accept the things that happen to us because changing things can cause the good things in our lives to change too.
