It sounds like Stranger Things season 5 is already in the works
Stranger Things star David Harbour confirmed Stranger Things season 5 is in the works in a recent interview with Gold Derby!
In the interview, Harbour mentions, on two occasions, Stranger Things season 5 while discussing his character, Jim Hopper. Stranger Things season 5! I hope you guys know how big of a deal that is!
It might not seem like a big deal that Harbour mentioned season 5, but it actually is for a few reasons.
First of all, a few years ago, the Duffer brothers said that Stranger Things could end after season 4. It was a big deal at the time. Shortly after, it was revealed that there could be four or five seasons of the series by executive producer and director Shawn Levy.
Earlier this year, there were some rumors that Stranger Things season 4 would also be the final season, but it would be split into two parts. It doesn’t sound like that will be the case.
Because Netflix didn’t announce Stranger Things season 4 would be the final season, as they do for almost all of the other big Netflix shows that are ending, we never really thought season 4 would be the end. But, it’s great to know season 5 is already in the works!
Technically, Netflix has the final say with all this season 5 talk, but let’s be real, Netflix is not canceling Stranger Things ever, ever, ever. It’s running as long as the Duffer brothers want it to keep going, and that’s that.
As Harbour mentions in the interview, he knows how Stranger Things will end, and he’s one of the few people who do know that information.
In context, Harbour mentions season 5 and how it relates to Hopper’s trauma and his past. While Harbour doesn’t reveal what exactly happened to Hopper, he does mention that Hopper’s past will continue to be explored in the fourth and fifth season. We’ll get to learn a lot more about what makes Hopper Hopper.
Here’s what Harbour told Gold Derby about Hopper’s story and how it will be paid off in the upcoming seasons:
"“… But I will tell you in season 4 and in season 5, if we’re ever able to film again, there is a lot to be revealed around the complexities of that story, which is really rich, and I’m really excited for you to see. And, it’s one of these things where I see the series as a whole. Because we know the ending, you’ll be able to go back and watch it and see, you know, what we were planting in season 3 that paid off in season 4 and season 5.”"
This has been alluded to in the past. Harbour mentioned in other interviews that those three boxes, “New York,” “Vietnam,” and “Dad” will have greater meaning in the new season.
So, we have a few big things to be excited about with Hopper in the new season and beyond.
Most Stranger Things fans assume that season 5 will be the final season of the Netflix series. Based on what the Duffers have said in the past, that seems likely, but only time will tell!
Stranger Things season 4 is aiming for a September restart date for filming. We don’t know how likely that is given the current pandemic, but it’s the most positive news we’ve heard in a while about production restarting.
Even if Stranger Things season 4 starts filming this fall, we likely won’t see the new season until the summer or fall of 2021, at the earliest.
We’ll let you know more about the future of Stranger Things when we find out!
