Magic: The Gathering fans rejoice! The directors behind Avengers: Endgame, the Russo brothers, are bringing the role-playing game to life as an anime series on Netflix.

Netflix just announced they are making a new animated series based on Magic: The Gathering, and the directors of Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo, are creating the series!

The announcement that the Russo brothers will helm this new series came today, and fans are so excited! Netflix released a promo picture that was first tweeted out by The Hollywood Reporter in their discussion of the news.

Netflix also shared the image via their NX Twitter account. Check out the image in the tweet below.

Such a small glimpse but one that has a fan like me very excited! I started playing Magic: The Gathering as a teenager in the late ’90s and now one of my sons plays. The game was a way to become anything I wanted and a way to connect to others. There is a really strong sense of family among the vast community of players.

Wizards of the Coast launched the game in 1993. I bought the initial players set when it was first released and am kicking myself now for not having kept it! The game has grown to be worth almost a billion dollars since then.

For fans, I hope we will see well-developed storylines with some exciting animation visuals. The series is set to expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers. Sources say this may be just the beginning in a partnership with Hasbro, who owns Wizards of the Coast.

More from Netflix Originals

With over 38 million fans worldwide, we can expect to see a lot of people binge-watching the series as soon as it hits the streaming site. Of course, no word on when we may see this come to life on-screen, but it seems as if Netflix decided to really invest in this project.

I expect that Hasbro will release a new line of action figures and other gear with the new series. Part of what makes something like adapting this game on-screen so profitable for studios is the potential toy/collectibles sales. Having a partnership with a toy company means all parties involved can capitalize on fans appetite for all thing M:TG.

I think it was a good choice for them to go with an anime style instead of live action. The team will be able to create worlds and stories how they imagine them as the anime format allows for unlimited creativity without having to worry about giant CGI budgets.

Hopefully, Netflix will release more images and hints at story and characters as they move through the development and production process. I’m interested to see who they will cast to voice the characters and imagine that there are many Hollywood actors who would love to be a part of it.

While this doesn’t make up for the fact that in order to stream Avengers: Endgame we have to head to Disney Plus, we can all be thankful that the Russo brothers teamed up with Netflix for this new original series that is sure to bring more fans to the game than ever.
