When looking for great family-friendly movies this summer, Netflix has you covered. School is out, and summer is upon us, and while that means plenty of outdoor fun, it is also the perfect time to spend some of those summer evenings with the family getting cozy. Luckily, Netflix has a great selection of movies that offer something for everyone.
Netflix has some of the latest releases that are already among many kids’ favorites. There are also some older gems that their parents might remember. Whether it is animated adventures or live-action comedies, these are the movies that bring summer fun for all ages.
K-Pop Demon Hunters
One of the biggest animated movies in recent memory, K-Pop Demon Hunters, is always going to be a go-to family-friendly movie. The inventive and mesmerizing movie follows a female K-Pop group that balances their roles as international superstars and sworn defenders of Earth from demons who lurk among them.
The animation is vivid and fun, while the songs steal the show, especially the Oscar-winning hit "Golden." It effectively mixes action and comedy while telling a heartwarming story of friendship and acceptance. It’s not hard to see how it became such a hit.
How to Train Your Dragon
One of the most acclaimed animated trilogies of all time didn’t take long to head into the live-action route. How to Train Your Dragon recreates the adventure of Hiccup, a young Viking living in a community sworn to fight against dragons. However, he finds himself in an unexpected friendship with a damaged young dragon named Toothless.
While How to Train Your Dragon suffers from the typical issue of feeling too similar to its animated original, it is also a beautiful-looking adaptation that brings the story to life in an exciting new way. It even features Gerard Butler reprising his role as Hiccup’s imposing father from the animated movie.
Goat
One of the newest family movies to appear on Netflix, Goat made a big splash in theaters earlier this year, but now it’s time to enjoy it at home. The movie follows a young goat who dreams of playing basketball, a sport dominated by bigger and stronger animals. However, when he is unexpectedly drafted to his favorite team, he has a chance to prove himself.
Goat is a funny and adorable animated movie, but it also works as a family-friendly sports story. It takes the tried-and-true underdog tale and has a lot of fun with it. The wild world it establishes makes the basketball sequences especially entertaining and inventive.
Swapped
While the likes of Disney and Illumination still seem to have a strong grasp on current animated movies, Netflix’s original animated movies have delivered some stellar entries. The latest offering, Swapped, is another win for the streamer. The fantasy movie finds a woodland creature and a high-flying bird who swap bodies and have to figure out how to survive.
The body swap setup is an old one in the family-friendly genre, but Swapped finds a new way to approach it with some fresh ideas. The voice cast is strong, with Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan bringing his charisma to the lead role. Though not talked about as much as other animated movies from this year, it deserves some love.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines
Another Netflix animated movie that showed the heights the streamer could reach with its original offerings, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, is one of the most underrated family-friendly movies of the 2020s. The movie follows the Mitchell family on a road trip that turns into a fight for survival when machines begin taking over.
Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, The Mitchells vs. the Machines features the same kinetic animated style seen in a lot of their animated movies. It is also laugh-out-loud funny, action-packed, and a sweet story about family members growing apart and coming back together.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Speaking of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, their animated movie gravitas was forever cemented with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The movie explores a different universe in which young Miles Morales gains the powers of Spider-Man and teams with other versions of Spider-Man from across the multiverse.
Even coming out amid the acclaim of the MCU Spider-Man movies, Into the Spider-Verse has been hailed by many as the greatest Spider-Man movie. It is very much a celebration of the character while also being a great Spider-Man adventure in its own right. Miles is an endearing and grounded hero amid this wild, hilarious, and energetic story.
Jumanji
While there are so many great animated family movies on Netflix to enjoy, there are also some live-action classics worth checking out. Jumanji may have grown into a franchise featuring the likes of Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black, but it started as a terrific vehicle for Robin Williams in this story of a jungle-themed board game that unleashes the wild into the real world.
Williams brings his usual wild energy and humor to the role, but it is also a terrific adventure movie with some unforgettable sequences. While it might be a little too intense for the youngest members of the family, it is still something most kids can enjoy.
Matilda
Another live-action family movie that became a classic in the 1990s is Matilda. Adapted from the story by Roald Dahl, the movie follows a young girl in a mean-spirited family who learns that she has special powers. She uses those powers to fight for a better life, as well as fight back against her terrifying principal, Miss Trunchbull.
Directed by Danny DeVito, Matilda is a nostalgic treat that embraces its quirky tone, making for a movie that feels reminiscent of Tim Burton’s movies from the era. While Netflix also produced a musical adaptation of this story a few years ago, there is no beating this fun and off-kilter take.
The Land Before Time
Another movie that will have parents getting nostalgic is The Land Before Time, an animated movie that many millennials will have watched on repeat when they were young. The movie follows a group of young dinosaurs who are separated from their parents during a great migration and need to band together to survive their long journey.
Parents should be warned that The Land Before Time is as sad as you remember, with some truly heartbreaking moments. However, it is also a terrific adventure with entertaining characters and fun, keeping the young viewers hooked.
Leo
Adam Sandler has a very successful partnership with Netflix, including his hit sequel Happy Gilmore 2. However, Leo is the first animated movie to come out of their partnership and another winner for the comedic actor. Sandler voices the titular character, a lizard who lives in a young elementary school classroom but looks to explore the outside world by helping the young students.
Sandler brings his signature humor to the movie, but there is also a sweet message that is especially nice for young kids to see. Leo is also a very entertaining musical with a number of great original songs that are also hilarious.
