Wednesday season 3 gets the best casting update (but there's a slight catch)

Who's ready to return to Nevermore Academy to see what mysteries await in Wednesday season 3? The last installment ended its run on Netflix back in September 2025, so I think it's safe to say fans are more than ready to dive back into the dark, twisted world of Wednesday.

While we're a long way from seeing the titular character back in her signature black-and-white wardrobe, solving another string of sinister crimes, there is still plenty of good news to share. First, the cameras have officially started rolling on the third season in Ireland.

No, you didn't read that wrong! Wednesday season 3 has begun filming, and Netflix has even confirmed it by making an announcement on its official X page. We had an inkling that production could be starting sometime in February 2026, based on a previous report from What's on Netflix. Now, we have that confirmation from the streaming giant itself.

However, that's not all the good news! Wednesday season 3 just received a really exciting casting update as well, and many fans have been hoping to see this particular addition enter the world of Wednesday since the first season.

Winona Ryder officially joins Wednesday season 3 cast

Wednesday has many well-known actors in its cast, but Winona Ryder’s addition feels especially fitting given her long creative history with executive producer and director Tim Burton. It’s the kind of casting move that almost feels destined, even if there’s a slight catch attached to her involvement that fans will want to keep in mind.

What's the catch, you ask? Well, Ryder joins the Wednesday season 3 cast as a recurring guest star. This means she won’t appear in every episode. While we would've liked to see more of her in the upcoming season, we're just glad she's joined the hit supernatural series at all.

Unfortunately, character details have yet to be revealed, leaving fans buzzing with speculation about who Ryder will play and how she’ll fit into the show. Deadline reports that her character's name will be revealed "shortly." Most recently, Ryder reprised her role as Joyce Byers in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Her other known projects include Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Girl, Interrupted, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice etc.

In other Wednesday season 3 casting news, Joanna Lumley has been promoted to a series regular as Granmama Hester Frump. However, the third season sees the departure of one cast member. Noah B. Taylor, who joined in season 2 as Bruno Yuson, will not be returning for Wednesday season 3. Other new season 3 cast additions include Chris Sarandon, Noah Taylor, Oscar Morgan, and Kennedy Moyer. Previously, we learned that Eva Green had been cast as Ophelia, Morticia Addams’ long-missing sister. She will appear in the third season as well.

Jenna Ortega reprises her role as Wednesday. The season 3 returning cast is also made up of Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Evie Templeton, Luis Guzmán, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Isaac Ordonez, Billie Piper, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Victor Dorobantu, and Fred Armisen.

While an official release date for Wednesday season 3 has not been announced yet, the chances of the show returning in 2026 are pretty much slim to none. There's just no way the show will finish up the filmmaking process in time. We're likely looking at a 2027 release. Perhaps an early to mid-2027 premiere is the most realistic expectation. We'll get back to you with the actual release date once Netflix announces it, so stay tuned to Netflix Life!
