Netflix has been on a final season kick, and it seems one of its biggest shows might soon be joining the list of hit shows ending with a final season in 2027.
On Wednesday, September 30, Netflix announced that production had finally wrapped on Wednesday season 3, sharing a new behind-the-scenes photo of Jenna Ortega in character to commemorate the moment. The announcement kept things rather simple and was used to literally just inform fans that production had ended with no further details provided about the third season, such as a release window, but there was one aspect of the release that caught the eyes of some fans.
When announcing the end of production, Netflix touted that “the coffin is closed,” which some began to read into as a hint that the framing was a subtle clue that Netflix was about to close the door on Wednesday with its third season serving as its final season. At first, it seemed like fans were reading too much into the wording, but then came a pair of posts from Ortega’s stunt double Jenny Ayumi, which seem to hint this really is the end for Wednesday.
Shortly after Netflix announced that production had ended on season 3, Ayumi took to social media to commemorate the end of production in a manner that certainly suggestsWednesday season 3 will be the show’s last.
“End of an era. A 5-year chapter finally comes to a close,” Ayumi wrote on the first post shared to her Instagram Stories (h/t Collider). She then followed that story up with a throwback to the first season which she captioned, “A little throwback to where it all began 5 years ago in Romania.”
Interestingly, shortly after posting the two stories, Ayumi deleted the first of the two, which has only further fueled speculation that Wednesday season 3 will be the show’s final season. Many fans have seen the removal of the first message as a case of Ayumi backtracking after sharing information that wasn’t yet meant to be public. We’ve seen this happen many times over the years in which a member of a production team, be it someone on the cast or crew, posts an update that has not yet been known and then quickly deletes the post, realizing they shared something that was not yet announced.
Unfortunately, the internet is forever, and fans are always quick to screenshot and screenrecord posts and then circulate them on social media even after their removal. This was the case earlier this week when a writers’ assistant accidentally confirmed the Bridgerton season lead.
Should Wednesday indeed come to an end with season 3, it’ll join a growing list of Netflix Originals to end with a final season in 2027, including hits such as The Night Agent and The Lincoln Lawyer. But hey, at least they're getting final seasons! Other Netflix shows have not been as lucky, and a three-season run for Wednesday seems perfect given that the character's time at Nevermore Academy is coming to an end.
