With TUDUM now updated, it’s time to take a closer look at the top five most-viewed movies and shows on Netflix. The two lists have several surprises from last week, showing us what has been popular with viewers. They've clearly not been listening to the critics when they made their choices from the many new additions from Netflix each week.
The movie list includes a couple of films where the 'never mind the critics' element applies. That's a great approach. Watching what you like, not what you're told to like, is a good plan. That is balanced out by two strong family viewing movies that likely had an added attraction over Easter. And for a twist and touch of variety, there’s also a disturbing documentary film in there.
Critics also come into play on the shows. Although in this instance, they may be right, as one new series could struggle. The viewers will make up their minds, of course. Elsewhere in the top five, it’s an eclectic mix with a popular drama making its first impression on Netflix and an old favorite returning. The critics are right about the other top shows this week, as they continue to enjoy an outstanding run of success.
Top five most watched movies on Netflix week ending April 20
5 - Rise Of The Guardians
Perhaps a little sickly sweet with Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and the Sandman all teaming up to beat the baddie, Pitch Black. The gang signs up Jack Frost to tackle the baddie for them. It will have been decent family fare over the Easter break.
4 - Oklahoma City Bombing: American Terror
Another documentary focusing on the story of the tragic bombing in 1995. 168 people, including 19 children, were killed when a truck bomb was detonated at a federal office building in Oklahoma City. The movie has spine-tingling testimony from investigators and the bomber, Thomas McVeigh.
He was executed in 2001 for the crime, but interviews with a journalist while he was in prison feature heavily in this documentary.
3 - Life Or Something Like It
A slight surprise seeing this one in the top five. It’s a rom-com starring Angelina Jolie and was released in 2002. Perhaps that combination of a much-loved genre and a top star helped attract viewers. It was slammed on release, though.
The film made a massive loss, barely covering half its budget. Jolie did pick up an award for the movie, but I doubt she is shouting much about a Golden Raspberry for Worst Actress. Critics can be wrong, as we know well, but you have been warned!
2 - Meet The Khumalos
Who would have thought a South African family comedy would be so widely popular? Netflix probably knew and was wise to share it. The story is about a teenage boy and girl who are dating, but their mums aren't happy. The two moms were best friends, but that's all changed now as they both want to end the relationship.
1 - The Life List
What a strong run for this fun rom-com. It’s now week four at the top of the movies list since it was released. It’s another that has bucked the trend with viewers ignoring the critics' poor reviews. Sofia Carson, Kyle Allen, and Connie Britton are the main stars in the cast. It’s an enjoyable watch for sure.

5 - A Discover Of Witches: Season 1
Now here's an odd entry. It’s the opening season of a popular show from 2018. Witches, drama, romance, vampires, and more all feature in this new series on Netflix. That's brought the show to a much wider audience and seen it jump straight into the top five. Seatbelts fastened, we already know there are three seasons and 25 episodes overall, so there is a long way to go yet.
4 - Bad Influence: The Dark Side Of Influencing
The run of Adolescence brought social media influence to the fore. This three-part documentary raises some related issues about the impact of influencers on teenagers and younger children. Over the series, we see how social media’s dark side affects Pippa Rockelle. It’s not an easy or comfortable watch, especially if you are bringing up a family.
3 - Adolescence
The hard-hitting drama continues its impressive run. This is now its sixth continuous week in the top five. In the six weeks since its release, the show has shot up to become the third most viewed Netflix series ever. It’s still an impressive, if disturbing, watch.
2 - Ransom Canyon
With the success of Yellowstone on Paramount, hopes would have been high for another Western drama about life on the ranch. Ransom Canyon is just out on Netflix, but to a cold reception. It comes across as formula-driven and bland in storylines, but it has some fantastic scenes and cinematography to help it survive.
Straight in at number two is a great start, but will viewers like it enough to stick around? Tune in next week to see where it sits in the lists.
1 - Black Mirror: Season 7
There’s always a place for clever, thoughtful, and mind-stretching storylines. Black Mirror rarely fails on that front, and this seventh season is living up to that promise. If you like some sci-fi and technology-based twists wrapped in satire, the show is made for you.
