If you needed another reason to be a proud Netflix subscriber, read on. We promise that you will be almost delighted with the news to come.
The truth is that while men and women can do most things equally well, many times the man still gets paid more. And not just a little bit more, but quite a lot. Is this fair? Of course not, but many industries have been set up that way. That includes the television and filmmaking industry.
When it comes to the new hit Netflix Western, Ransom Canyon, lead Josh Duhamel makes the most of any cast member. Exactly how much? Who knows? He was the first to be cast after having a long history of successes, including starring on Euphoria. He was the actor Netflix thought it needed to bring eyes to the screen.
Netflix subscribers should be happy with the new Ransom Canyon star Minka Kelly delivers
The streamer also appears to have been set on its lead actress for the series. Minka Kelly, perhaps best known for playing Lyla Garrity on Friday Night Lights, seems to have been the only actress asked to read with Duhamel when the show was being cast. Kelly was cast shortly after Duhamel signed on.
Kelly has been a proponent of women getting the same opportunities as men. This includes a social media post in support of FashionAble, which aims to increase women's chances of equal pay in the United States, Peru, Mexico, and Ethiopia. But would Kelly be paid as much as Duhamel for Ransom Canyon?
The short answer is no. The bigger answer is that the pay difference is not a huge amount. The amount Kelly is getting paid is apparently a lot more than her asking price for the series, too.
In an interview with Deadline, Kelly said, "I think that’s probably one of the best things about working with Netflix, is that they’re very pro (equal pay for men and women). So I didn’t have to fight very hard. They sort of made that easy. I feel really lucky to get to work with the company that does care about that."
In other words, Netflix strives harder to do the right thing than many different studios. That means while we can enjoy Ransom Canyon because the series is fabulous, we can also rest assured that the lead actors enjoyed making the series, and were paid almost the same. That is how the business should work.
