Netflix is adding 12 movies and series this week (April 20, 2025)

Mayhem, murder, and more this week on Netflix

Netflix adds mayhem and mirth this week, with a sprinkling of sports and sentiment for good measure. As usual, there's something for everyone this week in the debuting titles on your favorite streaming service.

For those of you that observe Easter, I hope you have a wonderful day. Just be sure to find every last one of those Easter eggs you hid under the couch. For those that don't celebrate, you have all those half-price chocolate bunnies, Cadbury creme eggs, and assorted candies to fill your larder until next year.

And as my daughter wisely pointed out years ago, the Reese's peanut butter eggs have the highest ratio of peanut butter filling to chocolate of all varieties. Do not waste this opportunity!

In the meantime, we have a dozen actual movies and shows coming to us this week. Good thing, too, as we're losing some great shows this week. No Hard Feelings, fam, but Minions is about to leave the building. Fear not, happy viewer; Netflix is bringing comedy, drama, action - you know, the usual lineup of life as we know it from the unreal world of entertainment.

Netflix adds some big titles and wraps up a long-time favorite series this week

Among the big draws this week on Netflix are Tom Hardy and You. Sorry, it's not some bizarre AI-generated dating show, although I'm sure that's in the offing somewhere soon. I picture some horrible combination of The Electric State and Temptation Island - and I weep for the future.

The week kicks off Monday with Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey. I'm willing to bet that a documentary about an animal that 95 percent of the audience has never heard of wasn't on your bingo card for the next top Netflix show, but I have a strong feeling this one will surprise you.

Who thought My Octopus Teacher would be such a hit? The director of that Oscar-winning film, Pippa Ehrlich, returns with another heartfelt study of the bond between mankind and the animal world. I'd be shocked if this isn't another sleeper hit. Plus, pangolins are just so weird.

Five more titles pop up on Tuesday, and they run the gamut from searing dramas to sports docs to more reality shows. One of the most promising titles is Battle Camp. The latest competition series features stars- well, reality show stars - from previous Netflix series. Watch people scheme their way to a $250,000 cash prize at the end of the 10-episode run. Woo Hoo, that's enough after taxes to buy a month's worth of groceries!

We'll also get a documentary on one of the top stars in tennis in Carlos Alcaraz: My Way. That's going to be easier viewing than either of the other titles. A Tragedy Foretold: Flight 3054 recounts the story of the worst air disaster in the history of Latin America over three episodes. Don't confuse UnBroken with the 2014 film. This 2025 documentary tells the story of seven siblings who survived the horrors of the Nazi death camps in WWII.

After those two titles, we need a breather. Fictional evil is much more palatable than the real thing. And Bullet Train Explosion already had my attention. An updated Speed, set in Japan? It's a remake of 1975's The Bullet Train, which Speed was based on. So there.

Add a rich political subtext of a government unwilling to submit to terrorists, and it's even better. Now add that it's directed by Shinji Higuchi, the brilliant mind behind Shin Godzilla, and I might watch this three or four times before the week is out.

A Dog's Way Home plays like a retelling of Homeward Bound. IYKYK. I prefer things on the darker side. And I know more than a few subscribers are going to shed some tears over the end of a series this week.

Season five of the popular psychological thriller series You wraps up this week with 10 episodes. The less-than-savory Joe Goldberg returns to New York but learns that money and murder don't always create a fairy tale ending. All 10 episodes will be available immediately, so binge away.

The week closes out with four more titles. Minions may be gone, but the kids get Pokémon Horizons: Season 2: The Search for Laqua season 2 part 2 in their place. Fans of K-drama can get their fix with the second season of the popular high school drama, Weak Hero Class 2. Jewel Thief - The Heist Begins sounds like a series, but it's a stand-alone Hindi-language action thriller. I bet it has something to do with, I dunno, a jewel heist.

The top title for me will be Havoc, an action thriller from director Gareth Evans (The Raid, Gangs of London). Yes, the man knows how to direct gripping action sequences. But the underlying drama isn't missing, either. Tom Hardy (please, you know what he's been in) stars as a detective who has to rescue a politician's son after a drug deal gone bad. I'm in!

The rest of the cast is okay, I suppose: Jessie Mei Li (Shadow and Bone), Timothy Olyphant (Justified, The Santa Clarita Diet), and Forest Whitaker (again, you know the man's work). Am I watching? Oh, yes indeed.
