The Merry Gentlemen parents guide: How sexy is the Netflix rom-com?
By Reed Gaudens
When first photos from The Merry Gentlemen were released, it's safe to say that a legion of One Tree Hill fans were immediately excited to tune into the Netflix original movie. The pictures revealed Chad Michael Murray channeling Magic Mike by stripping down for a holiday-themed all-male dance revue. One Tree Hill fans were already on board, but this solidified it.
Obviously, the steamy role led to Murray releasing a sexy 2025 calendar, but just how sexy does The Merry Gentlemen get? In the movie, Ashley (Britt Robertson) returns home to Sycamore Creek when she's let go from her Broadway dancing job. After she learns that her parents' local venue is in dire straits, she produces a show full of shirtless men to bring in the big bucks.
In between the dances hotter than hot cocoa, romance blossoms between Ashley and local heartthrob Luke (Murray). It's the small-town holiday rom-com we all know and love. If you're hoping to tune into the new movie, but you're wondering if it's too racy for your liking, don't worry. We're sharing the age rating and explaining the content of the movie, in-depth but spoiler free.
The Merry Gentlemen is rated TV-PG
According to the official page for The Merry Gentlemen on Netflix, the Christmas rom-com has been given the age rating of TV-PG for mild themes. The streamer cautions that parental guidance is suggested when watching the movie in spite of its typically family-friendly rating. For a closer look at what to expect from the movie, here's a rundown of its content!
Sex and nudity
There are no sex scenes in The Merry Gentlemen at all, just a couple a scene featuring a kiss between a male and female character. While there's no explicit or graphic nudity, various dance sequences feature shirtless men suggestively writhing around stage. Even though they are not Magic Mike-level graphic, some parents might not find these scenes appropriate for younger viewers.
Additionally, the men are shirtless in scenes beyond those on stage and there are other parts of the male body that are on display. In one scene, the men are dressed in black tights that reveal their bulges, though it's not egregious. In another scene, one of the dancers pulls down his pants from behind to show off his Christmas underwear. Again, there is no nudity beyond shirtless men.
Other content warnings
The Merry Gentlemen doesn't contain any language or profanity that should be concerning to parents, and there are no instances of violence. Also, some holiday movies have themes that could be triggering to some viewers, whether it's grief or illness, but this one doesn't have anything of major concern (unless you have been recently fired from your dream job).
Overall, it's probably a better holiday romantic comedy to watch with your friends, significant other, or other adult companions rather than for family movie night. Kids likely won't find much to love here anyway. (Try Spellbound instead!) No matter what, you're going to have a great time watching two talented stars deliver a memorable Christmas rom-com with a recognizable ensemble around them!
