It's official: The Penn-Wyler administration drama is far from over! On Oct. 29, exactly two weeks after the release of the political thriller's fourth season, Netflix announced the renewal of The Diplomat season 5, a decision that had been all but expected given the show's critical acclaim and commercial success. Thankfully, the waiting game for the renewal was short-lived.

Netflix touted The Diplomat's success in the Global Top 10, spending 13 weeks on the leadboard across its run and attracting a cumulative total of over 130 million views and counting since making its premiere back in 2023. The fourth season continue to prove the show's staying power with stable viewership numbers, which came after the series earned its first Emmy Award win.

Upon the announcement of The Diplomat season 5, Netflix didn't share anything specific about the season, including plot details or confirmed cast returns, though based on how things were left in the explosive season 4 finale, we can anticipate what's to come and who will remain on board going forward. There are big changes ahead for the administration!

The Diplomat renewed for season 5 at Netflix

Obviously, we can anticipate Keri Russell to be back in her leading role as Kate Wyler, as well as Rufus Sewell as Kate's husband and the current Vice President of the United States Hal Wyler. However, Hal's status as the vice president will certainly be called into question after the season 4 cliffhanger, and so will Allison Janney's Emmy-winning role as President Grace Penn.

Janney and Bradley Whitford were added to the main cast as series regulars for season 4 in addition to Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah. The rest of the main cast includes Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge, and Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford. We anticipate at least Janney, Whitford, Ahn, and Essandoh to return for season 5, though Kinnear may not be back after Trowbridge's resignation.

The Diplomat season 4 also introduced Jodie Whittaker as Bethan Vaughan, the new Prime Minister, who is likely to continue recurring in season 5 if she's not ultimately added to the main cast. Netflix stated that more details about the fifth season would be revealed at a later date, and that likely includes specifics about the plot and any potential casting shakeups.

What to expect from The Diplomat season 5 so far

By the end of the fourth season, we were left with plenty of questions to be answered, including what's next for Kate after her public resignation from Grace's administration. Billie and Ganon followed her lead, and Hal also joined the trio outside the G7 conference. We're still not completely sold on what Hal will say to the press and whether he joined the movement and resigned, too.

But one thing's definitely for sure, and that's the fact that Grace's dangerous behavior as the President of the United States has been exposed to the world. There's no going back from at least three members of her staff quitting in such a public way, in defiance and protest of decisions she's making for their country. Season 5 is going to be another great one!

While there's certainly a way that The Diplomat season 5 could naturally wrap up Kate's story, Netflix made no mention of this being the final season. That doesn't mean a decision on this matter won't come in the future, but it's at least exciting that it doesn't appear to be the end. Hopefully, production will kick off early next year and season 5 will make its annual release in October 2027.

Stay tuned for more news and updates on the upcoming fifth season!
