The Diplomat season 4 made its premiere on Netflix on Oct. 15 and quickly had viewers on the edge of our seats. We joined Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) on the heels of discovering President Penn (Allison Janney) and Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), Kate's husband, stole the Poseidon weapon from Russia. Needless to say, Kate's stressed. But we're not stressed about the show's future.
The Emmy Award-winning political thriller series skyrocketed right onto the Netflix daily Top 10 ranking upon the season 4 premiere, and after Netflix unveiled the weekly global viewership numbers, that season 4 cliffhanger is almost certainly going to be resolved. While Netflix hasn't announced The Diplomat season 5 renewal as of this writing, the show's success and acclaim makes it an inevitability.
After four days of availability, The Diplomat season 4 debuted on Netflix's Global Top 10 English-Language TV Shows ranking in the No. 5 position with 4.8 million views. On paper, that's on the low side for an established original series, especially with the mystery limited series Below growing to 21.2 million views in its second week, but these are very good numbers. Here's why.

The fourth season's opening viewership figures are right on par with the third season's. Last October, The Diplomat season 3 also debuted with 4.8 million views during its first four days of release, which trailed the first season's 8.5 million views and the second season's 5.6 million views. Some might see viewership that declines, but all in all, it's an impressive study in stability.
The Diplomat season 5 is a safe bet for renewal
We have seen in the past few years that new Netflix original series tend to debut with much higher viewers with the first seasons and then fall with each following season. A lot of comedies have completely halved their views between seasons 1 and 2, but The Diplomat has clearly found a sweet spot near the 5 million mark, proving a returning audience that's locked in.
Netflix has previously given the political thriller speedy renewals to ensure that the series remains running on an annual cadence. So far, all four seasons have been released annual, and three of those seasons have each dropped in October in consecutive years. That's generally unheard of in streaming, especially for Netflix drama series. It's an anomaly the streamer will keep around.
The question shouldn't be "if" Netflix will renew a fifth season but "when," and the next biggest question will be whether that could be the show's final season. Netflix has been ending a number of beloved shows recently with The Night Agent season 4, The Lincoln Lawyer season 5, and Emily in Paris season 6 all marking each hit original's last hurrah. The Diplomat could be next.
However, there's plenty of gas in the tank for Kate continuing to fight the good political fight for at least two more seasons, depending on what creator Debora Cahn has planned. The series remains Netflix's most critically acclaimed current drama as an Emmy Awards contender for Outstanding Drama Series. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a renewal and another Emmy win.
